BM5, just one? Might as well reserve 2 for Alvin + GF, or our Kookaburra Umbrella Girl……..

Saw on the AFOS website that the Proton Impian (otherwise known as the Proton Waja) will be competing in this year’s ATCC.

Fariqee Hairuman will be driving one of the cars, after being outclassed by his team mate Shaun Watson-Smith for almost the entire BTCC campaigns.

Team PSP returns to Asia after its 3-year campaign in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), and with renewed vigour begins a new challenge in the Asian Touring Car Championship (ATCC). The ATCC is an FIA sanctioned race championship that spans race events across Asia and is held as part of the prestigious Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS).

Immediately after the last BTCC race Team PSP contested at Donington Park in late September, extensive work has been undertaken by the team to prepare itself for the ATCC campaign. The high ambient and track temperatures coupled with high humidity levels required a total redesign of the cooling systems for the water, engine oil and gearbox systems. A change of championship specific tyres from Dunlops to Michelin tyres also required the team to review the setup on the cars.

BTCC pilot Fariqe Hairuman has returned to his seat in the Proton Impian and is joined in the new campaign by seasoned Team Petronas driver Mashlino Buang. Both drivers have put in extensive miles in testing in Johor and Sepang circuits over the last few months where both cars and drivers have been building up the pace.

Fariqe said: “We have spent the last 4 months testing and preparing ourselves for the new challenge and I am ready for the battle. The car is fantastic on our new Michelin Tyres and the crew have done an excellent job preparing the car for Asia’s weather. I am really looking forward to all the new tracks in Asia and will do my best to do as much winning as I can!”
Mashlino said: “This is the fastest race car I have ever driven! It is not an easy race car to drive, but after a lot of testing and familiarizing I am starting to enjoy the car a lot. I am very excited as the season is about to begin, and am looking forward to winning as many races as possible.”

David Wong, Team Principal said: “We are very well prepared for the ATCC. In anticipation of the high ambient temperatures and high humidity we have extensively modified the cars, and have also done extensive testing to ensure they are on the pace. We have also engaged a professional fitness trainer for Fariqe and Mashlino in preparation for the ATCC because of the increased demands the hot weather will place on them. We are doing all we possibly can to ensure our competitiveness and deep down I have a good feeling we are going to win some races this year!”

7. 2 Malaysian Youngsters at AFOS
Two Malaysian youngsters will be hoping for a good showing in front of their home crowds in the next two rounds of Formula BMW Asia to be held at Sepang International Circuit on May 14 and 15 as part of the Asian Festival of Speed (AFOS).

Nineteen-year-old hot shot Charlie-Ro Charlez (Team Meritus) will be joined by series newcomer and Malaysian karting ace Aaron Lim (also 19), who is the latest addition to Minardi Team Asia.

Charlez who, unlike many of his fellow drivers, does not have a background in karting, was nothing short of phenomenal in the opening rounds in Bahrain last month, with a second place finish in his first ever Formula BMW Asia race. After two rounds, he tops the Rookie Cup standings and lies third overall in the championship race.

Fellow countryman Lim was Malaysian Junior Karting Champion in 1999, twice-Malaysian Karting Open Champion in 2002 and 2004, has won two rounds of the Asian Karting Championship, and qualified 13th overall in last year’s World Karting Championship.

The two youngsters will, however, have their work cut out if they plan to shine for their local fans in what is the most competitive field yet. Championship leader Salman Al Khalifa (BAH/Team E-Rain) was in scorching form in his home event last month, displaying exceptional skill and nerves of steel on his way to taking two pole positions, a victory and a second place in the opening rounds.

Right behind him on the leaderboard and equally determined take the 2005Championship title is Formula BMW Junior Robert Boughey (THA/Team Meritus). Boughey scored a long-overdue victory in Round 2, and will be looking for nothing less than a repeat in Malaysia.

In addition to Boughey, the four other Formula BMW Juniors are already proving exciting young drivers, with all of them in the top eight on the Championship leaderboard.

At just 15, Armaan Ebrahim (IND/E-Rain), fourth in the Championship, is quickly adapting to the new car, while Australian Michael Patrizi (Team Meritus) has a podium finish already under his belt. An Suk Won (KOR/E-Rain) and China’s Wang Jian Wei, who is racing with series newcomers Ao’s Racing Team, have also acquitted themselves well in the early stages of the season.

Rounds 3 and 4 of Formula BMW Asia will be run over 20 laps each on the shortened format of Sepang International Circuit.

Formula BMW Asia Points Standings after Round 2

1.Salman Al Khalifa (BAH/Team E-Rain) 35 points, 2. Robert Boughey (THA/Team Meritus) 26 points, 3. Charlie-Ro Charlez (MAS/Team Meritus) 25 points, 4. Armaan Ebrahim (IND/E-Rain) 20 points, 5. Michael Patrizi (AUS/Team Meritus) 18 points, 6. An Suk-Won (KOR/E-Rain) 12 points, 7. Hamed Al Fardan (BAH/Team Meritus) 11 points, 8.Wang Jian-Wei (CHN/Ao’s Racing Team) 5 points, 9. Mitsunobu Endo (JPN/Team Meritus) 5 points, 10. Dejan de Zoysa (SRI/Minardi Team Asia) 5 points.

Rookie Cup Standings after Round 2

1.Charlie-Ro Charlez 35 points, 2. Armaan Ebrahim 32 points, 3. Michael Patrizi 25 points, 4. An Suk-Won 22 points, 5. Wang Jian-Wei 14 points, 6. Dejan de Zoysa 14 points.

Suggest that we meet after the Sepang toll at 9:30am. We shall then convoy to the welcome centre and collect more tickets. I spoke to the guys who gave out the tickets, and I understand that they have sufficient tickets available but must collect from the welcome centre. Just wanted to ensure people turn up and not take tickets and not be there.

There are 2 dengkil R&Rs on the ELITE highway (one KLIA-Shah Alam bound, and the other Shah Alam-KLIA bound). Steward is referring to the Shah Alam-KLIA bound on the ELITE highway.

AFOS 2005…what a day!

For me, the festival of speed started early in the morning. On my way to SIC at 10+, I was passed by a convoy of Ferrari. The lead car, a blue 355 I think, was doing at least 200kph, followed closely by a red 360. Then further back was a group of “cruising” Ferraris, one of which is a 360 Challenge Stradale.

Met up with the MyKart group at Dengkit R & R and proceeded to SIC. Little did I know that the convoy leader in a Citroen MPV decided to turn it into the Citroen WRC and he sped away right after joining the highway.

So far, the need for speed for the spectators of AFOS seem relentless.

The Formula BMW started a 11am. AFOS is only racing the North Circuit which is turn 1 – 6 of the main track then back to the main straight. One Minardi Team Asia car stalled coming out of the pitlane! The race is without much incidence with Malaysia’s Aaron Lim finishing 5th.

The next race was the Porsche Carrera Cup. On pole was the English youngster, Jonathan Cocker the 2004 British GT Champion. During the race, one Porsche caught fire and Rizal Ramli spun out when he was in second place chasing Jonathan Cocker. After Rizal Ramli’s excursion to the grass, no one is close enough to Jonathan Cocker to put any pressure on him and he won the race easily.

After the Porsche Carrera Cup round 1 the pitlane was open to the public. I was surprised to see 3 white BMW E46 320i Touring Car! See http://bmwclubmalaysia.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2382 for the specifications of this 275bhp beauty.

The cars are run by Team Engstler Motorsport (http://www.engstler-motorsport.de/) with Franz Engstler driving the lead car and Thai touring car pro Prutirat driving the other car. They came with a spare car (though a 3rd driver may take up the car in future races).

Franza Engstler started on pole with Farique Haruman second in the Proton Impian BTCC car. Before the race, there is talk of him trying to win the race…….

Engstler made a bad start but kept his lead. Down the main straight, the second Proton Impian must have hit someone or was hit by someone, causing it to spin taking out a few Hondas (apart from the BMW & Proton, the rest of the field are all Honda’s).

After a few laps, it was clear that the Proton Impian is nowhere in the same class as the BMW 320i. After about 5 laps, the BMW built a lead of 4.7 second when the red flag was shown to stop the race. A car was left at the end of the straight.

Upon restart, the BMW again pulled away and Engstler won the race easily.

A look at the qualifying times will confirm the superiority of Engstler in the BMW :

1. Franz Engstler BMW 320i 1.10.93
2. Mohd Farique Proton Impian 1.12.14
3. R.S. Prutirat BMW 320i 1.12.23
4. Mashilino Buang Proton Impian 1.12.93
5. AO Chi Hong Honda Integra 1.14.93

The lap times I recorded during the race for all the winners are :

1. Porcshe 911 GT3 (Jonathan Cocker) : 1 min 07 sec
2. Formula BMW 1,200cc (Al Khalifa) : 1 min 08 sec
3. BMW 320i (Engstler) : 1 min 11 sec

All in all, incident packed races and much better value than watching F1!

19. Re: AFOS 2005…what a day!
AFOS 2005…what a day!

….. snipped…..

All in all, incident packed races and much better value than watching F1!
That was a quick report! Quite incident packed indeed. However, sad to say that for events at Sepang, they need to draw more crowd.

Shame really, because the Formula BMW and the Porsche Cup races were exciting with some strong Malaysian challengers in Aaron Lim and Rizal Ramli. Local interest also focussed on Charlie-ro Charlez (what kind of name is that anyway?) who is a Aussie born Malaysian resident. He finished 3rd.

The Asian Touring Car Championship, was a little more unusual with 4 (and later 3) cars in the division A category and the remainder of the Hondas in the division B category. It was interesting to see the Proton Impiana (Waja in Malaysia) in close to BTCC spec racing against the BMW 320i. Not quite there, as the BMWs looked effortless, but the Impianas looked pretty strong.

The presence of the many car clubs in Malaysia (boy are there many of them) spiced things up further. The enthusiasts had their chance to show off their Celicas, RX-7 and RX-8s and other highly tuned cars, including those with spectacular paint jobs.

Didn’t stay until the end but left after the second ATCC race (so missed the final Formula BMW and Porsche Cup races), but dropped by at the kart circuit and found Citykarting there in practice with Wai Leong giving some coaching to Syafiq Ali and other drivers.

The thought of the Sepang kart circuit brought back many fond memories, perhaps in the near future we can have an enduro there as well.

20. We started from the dengkil R
We started from the dengkil R&R (Yusnee, Steward, Wei Li & Joyce, Siang Wei & Irwan and his troupe). Got a chance to spy on some Proton Mule cars… one TRM a couple of SRMs and the mid engine sports car. Didn’t get much time to eyeball and photograph, coz the proton crew quickly covered the cars in tarpauline. The sports car looked good… much like an Elise (no surprises there).

Enjoyed the convoy to the track. *grin*

Re the event: I thought more could be done to hype up the events as it had all the ingredients for making a great spectacle. Should also get more participants for the races… was even thinking that they should also have a Formula BMW-Seniors (for non F1 aspirants like us)… *grin* Get more people to race those wonderful open wheel racing cars! Imagine 26-30 cars on the grid! Yeah!! Should also race more often with good coverage… get more people to be aware of what is happening. To be honest, I consider myself fairly keen enthusiast but… I could not even name the drivers in the F-BMW race.

Had to leave early… but made a detour to see Uncle Ng at the kart circuit. Wai Leong and Citykarting were practicing there. Didn’t get chance to talk to Wai Leong, but had a chat with Uncle. Surprised to see them there.

But aaaahh…. the sepang kart circuit is such a great circuit. I wanna race there again!
Fazz, did you manage to collect the tickets?
Yes collected the tickets. They gave 10 tickets over the weekend, and we should collect the remaining 10 on the race day at the paddock entry.

Looking at the response so far, I don’t think we will need the full 20 tickets.

Hey guys,

If the tickets are still available and nobody else wants them, can I pass a few to some of my friends (non my-kart members though).

Btw, are we meeting up somewhere to convoy there? Can discuss this at Round 4 too.

Cheers!

as mentioned to you last weekend – I will likely go but on Sunday afternoon only…hence will need tickets before weekend cos I have no chance to convoy nor want to trouble anyone coming to the gate to meet me……

Thanks.
