MemberAlonso showed a hell of a lot of maturity in holding a 2sec a lap faster Schumi back to win the race. Definitely, something to learn here. Alonso drove very cleanly without doing anything dodgy.
Doing the same at Citykarting would be even more challenging given that karts are not affected by the bad aerodynamics of following another car like F1 cars do.

Participant
I had a deja vu watching Alonso v Schumacher for the final 10 laps of Imola. Just this afternoon I was at City Karting watching Wai Leong & his charges doing some practice race.
Eric Yong in his Intrepid managed to hold off a young karter for the whole race even though he was only doing 58’s, at least 3 sec off the normal pace. The defensive driving is reminiscent of Alonso at Imola and it is something we all should learn coz with a few tricks up our sleeves you can hold up a faster kart for at least 5-6 laps!
BM5, let’s arrange something soon to race with Eric!
Imola is particularly hard to overtake, due to it’s rather narrow track. That’s the reason Alonso could slow down considerably, avoiding the back markers in front (BMW Williams drivers………sigh!), yet at the same time preventing MS to get past. You need a lot of skill, not to mention nerve to pull off, and Alonso did it brilliantly.

Yes, we need more race practise in addition to solo testing runs, so running together with Eric & Jules will be a big bonus. Unfortunately Eric normally run on Sundays, I tried hard to pursuade him to change to Sats, but have not been successful!

BMW Williams are looking quite sad. At least Jacques managed to score some points with a strong drive.

I envy you guys. How much for a day’s outing with your rotax? How many myKARTers have their own karts nowadays?

No need to envy, just bite the bullet and take up chepot’s offer. Then we can have group practices. Each outing is charged RM 150.00 by Citykarting excluding parts replacement & tyres but including petrol & maintenance. You can run as many laps as you can physically & mentally manage, and that’s a lot! You’ll sleep like a baby at night after that, hehehe!

Not only race with Eric & Jules, Wai Leong will be in the race too! Imagine the 3 of them at the front doing 1 min laps, we won’t be able to pass them with our current skills!

Wai Leong ran with his young drivers on Sat afternoon, I overheard him mentioning that his lap time was 56 sec.

Only 56s? I thought he was doing 55s and 54s. At least thats what Ah boon and Ah Low said. Maybe 56s was his time on that particular day perhaps.26 April 2005 at 1:38 am #1960OSFlanker

54’s and 55’s can only be achieved in favourable conditions on good tyres. Last weekend Wai Leong & pals were using the tyres from the Kelantan race.
No matter the lap time, we all should learn how to defend position like Alonso at Imola – clean but firm.

ParticipantI hear my name being mentioned???
Yes, it takes skill to defend line and Eric & Wai Leong are both very experienced racers…..I am NOT in their league, this is for sure.
In any case, is the youngster that was dicing with Eric on the same engine? Likely he is on a J engine which means Eric is really playing with him cos 58s are a bit slow for his calibre….unless it’s on some old tyres.
On WL’s laptime : 56s on YGK – as those used in Kelantan would be about rite but maybe a second faster is correct.
Last of all, Fazz – as said, pls bite the bullet. You will soon notice karting is quite affordable if you drive for fun….like most of us! Best way to improve your karting is seat time….nothing less!
Cheers!

ParticipantWhat Jules said is correct. Most favourable times are done on good tires and desirable weather conditions.
