Immediately, I would like to know whether there is an overarching children’s charity that would like to work together with my-KART in the administration and collection of contributions. The donations to the charity must provide tax breaks and the distribution of funds must be transparent. Preferably the charity covers all children’s causes including the homeless, the orphans, the poor, the sick etc.

Have not heard of any major foundation or charity for kids like Amnesty or something. Most kids homes I have worked with or heard of are related to religious groups and self funded, they are usually private and run on a pretty small scale unless its the Ronald McDonalds’ Foundation. I guess we wouldnt want any of those?
Came accross the following in some of the annual reports I have read – from the names, I assume that they are not related to any specific religious groups.
1) Yayasan Amal Kanak Kanak Khas – a charity for the needy and less fortunate. Could not find anything on them besides the fact that TA Securities donated RM50k to them. From the size of the donation, they should be quite big and gov related.
2) Malaysian Council for Child Welfare – found a website –

they list quite a number of children’s homes, but they are all pretty small scale and mostly tied to either religious groups.
I have worked with some of them and can make contact them.Thanks Angeline. This is a useful start. Perhaps we need to evaluate a few and decide how we should work together. Preferably I’d like to keep it general as opposed to a specific ethnic / religious group. my-KART respects diversity so its own charity linkages should be diverse in nature.
I shall explain what I have in mind in relation to this umbrella children’s charity.
challenges for charity homes
The main challenge, I believe, for small geographically specific charity homes is the ability to reach out for contributions from the society. Usually, many of these charity homes are run by volunteers who spend most of their time tending to the children. Many a times, these charity homes may not be located in an area where it can tap into the contributions from the local residents etc.
Even if they are located in areas where they can tap contributions, the collections may not be consistent over a year.
In terms of awareness, many of these charity homes are not well known, further impacting the ability to reach out for contributions.
In short, these charities are significantly disadvantaged compared to the likes of the international children’s charities.
the umbrella children’s charity
I believe there is a need to have a single umbrella children’s charity (endorsed by the Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat through the Jabatan Kebajikan), that can bridge the gap for these local charity homes.
The role of this umbrella charity is to collect donations on a nationwide basis, and re-distribute them to the local registered children’s charities. Eligible charities could either be registered with this umbrella charity or simply taken from the list with the Ministry.
But the benefit of having this umbrella charity for the likes of my-KART is having an organisation which is specifically setup to collect and administer & distribute the donations on a nationwide basis. This organisation may tie in with a national bank (say Maybank or BSN) who would be happy to collaborate given the “good cause” and possible mileage gained. This organisation would also have a significant national reach and ability to even collaborate with national sporting events like the F1, M-League, Asian Games and my-KART etc.
Imagine one ringgit of your F1 ticket goes to the charity – that means around RM100k can be collected per event. Certainly, this organisation will be able to generate much more public awareness than any local charity will be able to do.
Of course, this organisation must have the responsibility to be transparent about its use of funds collected. Naturally some percentage will go towards administration, advertising and the likes. But the benefits to the individual charities far outweigh these administrative concerns. This organisation could even have the likes of PwC auditted the donations and publish a report every quarter as an example (in terms of how much of the funds is use internally, and how much is distributed to the respective charities).
The member charities and this organisation shall review the funding distribution on a regular basis using a matrix to determine the criteria for distribution. As an example, the more needy charities will be eligible for more.

[/quote]Angeline, I was just thinking about the Ronald McDonalds’ Foundation… have you worked with them before? Perhaps you can arrange a meeting with them to discuss a few things. I am beginning to think that the Ronald McDonalds’ Foundation could be a good partner for my-KART under the “Racing for the Children” banner. They are everywhere and provides my-KART with a wider channel to reach out to more people. Can we set a meeting date (say) by end of Nov?
Hmm .. Kiki might know about Ronald McDonalds’ Foundation. During the Team Matrix Motorsports days, her husband (Adian) used to arrange charity events with them.

I’d like to suggest a charity named “Rumah Solehah”. Although originally not a child specific charity, this organisation was originally established to provide medical, emotional and life support to single mothers who are HIV positive, who have been shunned by their families through, in most cases, no fault of their own. Over the years the charity has been able to provide excellent medical care and provided a better life for the mothers and children. As such, teh life expectancy of teh children has been increased and now many of the children require not just medical care but education! This is a new challenge which Rumah Solehah has selflessly undertaken.
Rumah Solehah (RS) began as a shelter for women suffering from HIV/AIDS in July 1998. In 2001, RS opened their doors to children who were either infected or affected by HIV/AIDS. In 2004, they won the Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Award in the category of HIV/AIDS Care & support.
Since its inception, over 70 women have ‘graduated’ from RS. Armed with both emotional and spiritual counselling and guidance provided by RS, many of these women who were once abandoned and ostracised by society because of HIV/AIDS have now returned to their families and communities. Others have even found decent jobs and become self-supporting. Today, RS houses 5 women and 22 children and hopes to expand their facilities to provide hospice care for those living with HIV/AIDS.
In my opinion, this charity is highly worthy of consideration – these poor children are not only suffering medically, they suffer emotionally, are isolated in a self opinionated society, become social outcasts and ultimately orphaned from their remaining loved ones.

good suggestion mark. whilst we are working on the other initiatives like the club launch and tie ups, we should also bear this and our club’s social activities in mind.

generally involved in all method of helping people
eg. single mother,orphanage home,education fund etc
