Shah Alam Stadium Kart Circuit (CW)
Debutant Nizam Rahman threw the gaunlet in the K3 class by finally stopping Nazri Ng’s unbeaten run in Round 3. Nizam held off second placed Nazri and Iskandar Mildseven in third. Khairul Hizam, Ahmad Faizal Kamis and Ramsey Sabelt rounded up the top six finishers. All six drivers were in the K3-45 category.
Thirteen drivers participated in the K3-70 category. The top three finishers were Desmond Khoo, Spencer Wong, Abdul Razak Razali, Khairul-Douglas, Danny Chooz, and Mohd Hazizy. Danny, the K3-70 winner for the first two rounds, now faces a new challenger in Desmond. The battle in the K3-70 category now tightens up.
In general, the K3-45 drivers dominated the K3 class ahead of the K3-70 drivers. The report by sub-category follows.
K3-45 report
Qualifying honours were shared by four drivers, with Nizam, Khairul Hizam, Ahmad Faizal and Nazri each claiming top spots in their respective qualifying groups. The overall top six in qualifying went to Nizam (34pts), Ahmad Faizal (32pts), Khairul Hizam (31pts), Ramsey Sabelt (28pts), Iskandar Mildseven (28pts) and Ramzul Zai (27pts).
The first few laps of the feature race was truly nailbiting. Nizam validated his qualifying position & skill by exploiting his first choice kart selection to leap from 15th and last on the grid up to 3rd position by the end of the first lap with Nazri and Khairul Hizam in tow right behind him. However, it was Iskandar Mildseven who led on the first lap after starting 10th. Spencer Wong who started on pole, dropped to second at the end of the first lap.
On lap two, Nazri made his move and passed Nizam for third – only for Nizam to take it back the next lap. But the bigger winner was Khairul Hizam who jumped both to move to second on lap three – the positions were: Iskandar, Khairul, Nizam and Nazri.
Nizam finally pounced for the lead (that he would keep till the end) on lap 4, whilst Nazri set about trying to pass Khairul for third. Nazri soon went pass Khairul on lap 5, and then past Iskandar on the last lap. The final order was Nizam, Nazri, Iskandar and Khairul.
K3-70 report
Qualifying honours in the K3-70 category went to Desmond Khoo with two qualifying wins, Mohd Hazizy and Khairul-Douglas with one win each. The top three K3-70 qualifying positions went to Desmond, Abdul Razak M Razali, Khairul-Douglas, Spencer Wong, Andrew Park and Mazlan Rahman (see table below).
The top 4 K3-70 qualifiers would participate in the main feature race, whilst the rest of the K3-70 drivers would be racing in the consolation final race.
The main feature saw Spencer convert his grid position (overall pole) to stay ahead of the top qualifying Desmond during the early stages of the race. However, Desmond managed to pass Spencer on lap 5 to take the K3-70 sub-category leadership which he would hold till the end of the race. Razak Razali and Khairul-Douglas would finish 3rd and 4th in the sub-category.
In the consolition final race, Danny Chooz was virtually unchallenged as he made strong progress from 4th in the sub-category to 1st at the end of the 1st lap. He also passed a few other K3-45 drivers to end up overall K3 2nd at the chequered flag.
The main interest however, was behind him involving the race between Douglas Chai (starting 2nd on the grid) and Mohd Hazizy (10th). Douglas had held 2nd in the sub-category until lap 7, when Mohd Hazizy went by to claim 2nd in the sub-category. Douglas finished 3rd in the sub-category of the consolation race.
Championship update
Nazri Ng continues to strengthen both his overall and K3-45 championship lead (56pts) but must now start watching out for the challenge from the likes of Nizam Rahman who debuts in 5th overall (20pts). However, the likes of Ramzul Zai (2nd with 30pts), Khairul Hizam (3rd & 28pts), Zainuddin Zainal, Jason Goodmund and Ramsey Sabelt (around 20pts each) are all not going to make it easy for the current leaders. With better luck for the likes of Zainuddin, Jason and Ramsey, they would be challenging for top honours.
In the K3-70 championship, Danny Chooz (like Nazri) continues to consolidate his lead with 51pts. However, the battle behind him is getting closer with the likes of Douglas Chai (2nd with 35pts), Desmond, Chris Chuang, Spencer and Razak Razali all within 9 pts of Douglas. These drivers will need to keep their eyes on their sub-category competition and not let the runaway K3-45 category drivers interfere.
