Upgrading policy & guidelines (2012)

policy

The general policy for upgrading from K3 (to K2 or K1) is that drivers must be able to race in faster karts in a safe and ethical way. Drivers should also support my-kart’s objectives.

guidelines

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: To participate in categories above K3, participants must be –
1) a club member
2) has sufficient damage deposit
3) must be competent in faster karts
4) participants must have a good safety & ethical record

1.0 ASSESSING COMPETENCE, SAFETY AND ETHICS

To assess the participants’ safety and ethical behaviours, drivers wishing to upgrade from K3 to K2 or K1 should be regulars of my-kart DRIVERS series events with a clean (safe & ethical) on track and off track record.

Competence, safety & ethical on track and off track record encompasses –
a) consistency – driving technique, performance, minimal unforced incidents / errors, season long results
b) judgment – no unnecessary aggression resulting in incidents, and complaints from other drivers
c) attitude – level headed when dealing with adversity on and off track

This can only be assessed through regular participation in K3.

What is regular may change from time to time, but typically a driver who has recently participated in more than 3 DRIVERS series events can be considered regular. There are TWO ways to achieve this: (1) In-season upgrade upon request; OR (2) Post season automatic upgrade. These are detailed below.

1.1 IN-SEASON UPGRADE UPON REQUEST

K3 participants may formally request for upgrade in their first season with K3. The committee will only then be able to consciously observe the applicant for 3 races AFTER their application for upgrade.

[table steps|description
Prerequisite|The applicant must have raced at least once in my-kart’s category K3 before requesting for upgrading.
Step 1|Request to join K1 through any kelab my-kart committee member, or through website (transparency) – http://club.my-kart.org/node/3696
Step 2|The main committee will evaluate whether the applicant can be considered for upgrading. Participants must demonstrate a sufficient level of competency accrued from experience in running or racing karts in order to be ready for the 100cc or 125cc level. ”Chicken Wing session(s)*” may be required to complete the evaluation process.
Step 3|The applicant if accepted will be under the committee’s observation for at least the next 3 races in K3. The minimum 3 race observation period in K3 is to evaluate the applicant’s level of sportsmanship, race ethics, safety practices and kart handling skills]

*note: The Chicken Wing Session is an informal session for hard core / senior my-karters to have fun while practising. Senior karters also use these sessions to coach newbies or anyone wishing to improve upon request. It is also use by the club to assess and evaluate any driver seeking to upgrade their karting grade to a higher level. These sessions are upon request.

1.2 POST SEASON AUTOMATIC UPGRADE

K3 participants may be automatically upgraded for the following season AFTER the completion of at least one K3 season if they finish within the top levels of the K3-45 or the K3-70 categories. Actual ranking will be specified in the K2 / K1 rules for the relevant season.

1.3 EXCEPTIONS TO THE ABOVE

1.3.1 “Returnees”
1.1 Refers to karters who have participated in my-KART events in the past, but who may not have participated in club events in the preceding year or more.
1.2 The eligibility criteria will apply.
1.3 Approval from Main Committee required before inclusion as a K2 / K1 participant.

9.5.2 “Talented Outsiders”.
2.1 Includes karters who have never joined my-KART events at all, but who may have participated in recognised external events, such as AAM / MAM sanctioned events.
2.2 Includes owners of private 100cc or 125 cc karts.
2.3 The eligibility criteria will apply.
2.4 Approval from Main Committee required before inclusion as a K2 / K1 participant.

9.5.3 “Invited Guests”
3.1 Includes experienced karters, usually known personalities in the motorsports fraternity, who may from time to time, be invited by Kelab my-KART Selangor to participate in K2 / K1 level events for promotional purposes.
3.2. The eligibility criteria will not apply, because these karters will only be allowed to participate in the K2 / K1 event on a “one-off” basis.

9.5.4 “Leapfroggers”
4.1 This applies when K3 drivers wish to leapfrog classes when there are 3 classes being run: K3, K2 and K1. In other words, when K3 drivers wish to leapfrog from K3 to K1 and bypassing the K2 class (when it is being run).
4.2 The eligibility criteria will apply. (Hence in a case where the K3 member has no experience with 100 or 125 cc karts, the member will not be eligible for participation in the K1 series).
4.3 Approval from Main Committee required before inclusion as a K1 participant.

1.4 PROBATION IN K2 or K1

Successful applicants will be allowed to join the K2 / K1 race on probation for at least 3 races. Again, the minimum 3 race probation period in K1 will be use to gauge the driver’s level of sportsmanship, race ethics, safety practices and kart handling skills.

Unsatisfactory Probation Period: If the committee is not satisfied with the driver’s performance for whatsoever reason during the the min 3 race probation period in K2 / K1, he/she will be demoted back to K3 and can only reapply for K1 in the next season.

2.0 SUPPORTING MY-KART’s OBJECTIVES

Drivers wishing to upgrade from K3 should also support my-kart’s objectives. Review the objectives here – http://club.my-kart.org/node/1468

While this is a subjective matter, the committee will be observing on and off track attitudes of the applicant. Volunteer work, good on track ethics, no negative experiences are some signs of drivers with the necessary requirements to meet the upgrade requirements. The volunteer philosophy is expanded here – http://club.my-kart.org/node/3419

3.0 CLUB MEMBER AND DAMAGE DEPOSIT

Actual details of the membership and deposit are detailed out in K2 / K1 rules for the relevant season.

In general, drivers must be members of the club and pay the required damage deposit. For example, for the 2010 season onwards, the damage deposit for both K1 & K2 are RM600. The damage deposit will be used if there are damages to your kart. Drivers are required to top up before they can participate in the next races. Payment details are found on this link – http://club.my-kart.org/node/3752

2012 DRIVERS series calendar appointments

2012 will be the 10th season of the successful my-KART DRIVERS series. This continues the tradition of the previous seasons as the base entry point series for amateur karters.

With every year, we expect competition to be tougher and tougher as drivers gain more experience in the series, with newer and hungrier drivers added into the fray.

Key information on the event details will be available on each event appointment.

For those interested, please register on this website with comments to this event notice.

DRIVERS series: 2012 K1 Rules & Regulations / Eligibility

DRIVERS K1/K2 Rules & Regulations

1.0 OBJECTIVES
The my-KART events aim to popularise grassroots motorsports, particularly karting by making participation in regular karting events accessible and affordable for its members. my-KART realises that there are a significant number of casual and semi-serious karting enthusiasts who would like to have the opportunity to participate in affordable racing events. In doing so, my-KART emphasises safety and fun above all. my-KART also aims at developing the amateur karting community, and thus the group and events will be conducted in a friendly atmosphere.

The K1 series aims to provide the opportunity for my-KART members to get one step closer to competitive kart racing. We will be using rental 125cc karts for this series. As such, participation in this series will be selective and limited to ensure only drivers with the right skill level, experience and behaviour are included at this level.

The purpose of this document is to set out the event formats and rules which meet the above objectives.

1.1 DRIVER AND KART ALLOCATION
The K1 series will be limited to available karts prepared by the Operators. For the 2012 season, the Operator will prepare 15 karts, equaling 30 available seats. However, my-kart may set aside a few karts as spares. Any additional demand for kart seats will need to be notified to the Operator at least ONE week in advance of the race event.

Driver allocation to karts will be based on the closest physical fit between the 2 drivers, based on weight and height.

For the 2012 season, the Operators will prepare new 150cc 4-stroke karts – which replaces the aging 125cc rotax juniors from the previous seasons. However, with effect from Round 04, the Operator will revert to the rental Rotax 125cc on CRG road rebel chassis. The engines will be rebuilt to be in improved condition but will remain non-exclusive.

1.2 WEIGHT/BALLAST
The minimum total weight for the driver will be 72 kg for K1 at all times. Should the weight of driver fall below this minimum threshold, ballasts shall be added to meet the minimum weight. It is the driver’s sole responsibility to ensure that the minimum weight requirement is at all times met (before and after race). A driver will be disqualified (DQ) if this rule is breached.

1.3 TRANSPONDER
Transponders will be use for timing management. It will be the driver’s responsibility to inform Race Director or the Time Marshall in the event there is a change of kart.

2.0 OVERVIEW OF RACE
Typically, the race is split into two segments for each driver and category:
(i) 2 qualifying races – Race 1 starting grid will be based on current my-kart race seedings. Race 2 starting grid will be based on the reverse order of Race 1’s starting grid. Points will be awarded and accumulated from Race 1 and 2.

(ii) 1 final – points will score towards the league table. Each driver will participate in one final each, but their groupings will be dependent on the total points accumulated from the 2 qualifying heats. Starting grid for the final will depend on he points accumulated during the qualifying races.

(iii) In the case where two drivers sharing the same kart, end up in the same final group, then the driver with the higher total points will take the assigned kart. The driver with the lower total points, will need to select another available kart.

3.0 RACE LENGTH
Each qualifying race and final race will run for 8 laps.

4.0 DRIVER CATEGORIES AND EVENT GROUPINGS
There will be no weight based driver categories within K1.

5.0 QUALIFYING RACE FORMAT FOR EACH CATEGORY
(i) For the 1st qualifying races, karts and drivers will be assigned to each grid position based on current my-kart seedings.

(ii) For the 2nd qualifying races, karts and drivers will be assigned to each grid position based on the reverse order of the 1st qualifying race’s starting grid.

(iii) change of karts: There will not be any kart changes in the K1 series. Karts that are damaged due to racing incidents will be pulled out of the event and fixed. There is no guarantee that the the damaged kart will be ready for the next race. Spare karts will be use only when it is damaged due to reasons not caused by the driver such as engine seizure, brake failure, etc.

All positions in qualifying will be eligible for points even though the driver may not have finished the race through retirement or disqualification. Points will be awarded according to the classified results of the qualifying races – highest points to drivers classified top. All drivers will be classified for the qualifying races.

6.0 FINAL FORMAT FOR EACH CATEGORY
Each driver will drive in only one final, although there may be more than one final. The most number of points scored over the 2 qualifying races will determine which final the driver falls into.

If two drivers who share the same kart, fall into the same final grouping, then the driver with the higher number of points in qualifying will use the assigned kart. The second driver will need to select another available kart for the final race.

The starting order for the finals will be in order of the total points scored, with the highest score at pole position.

A driver who DNFs (must return to pits on own power) will not score points even if they are in the top final runners. The next drivers in the lower final groups will benefit from the extra position gained from the DNF driver’s demise.

Points table:

There are 15 points scoring positions for the league table. Only the top 15 drivers in the finals share score points.

In the championship table, all 10 scores will count towards the final drivers’ championship. This is different from the previous year’s practice of 8 scores out of 10.

7.0 FEE & PRICING
The pricing for the K1 series will be set by the organisers and is subject to change due to market forces and with minimal notice. Currently the fees for the series are as follows

Security Deposit of RM600 per K1 driver is payable in full prior to each race, and must be maintained at RM600 throughout the season. Any costs arising from loss or damage to karts will be deducted from this deposit amount.

K1 Event fee = RM200 per driver per event.

Fees are paid in full upon registration. Only cash is accepted. The fees will not be refunded if the driver does not complete the full event.

8.0 ARBITRATION
The my-KART event organisers has the final say.

9.0 ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR K1 PARTICIPATION

9.1 Club Membership
The K1 series is open to paid up members of Kelab my-KART Selangor only.

9.2 Deposit
Participants must pay a refundable deposit of RM600 prior to joining a K1 event. Any cost of damages will be deducted from this deposit. Participants must “top up” the deposit back up to RM600, prior to each K1 event. The deposit will be refunded only at the end of each K1 season.

9.3 Driver Competency, Safety and Ethics Record
Participants must comply with the upgrading policy & guidelines – http://club.my-kart.org/node/3753

Specifically for the 2012 K1 category – the top 15 drivers in the K3-45 and top 8 drivers in the K3-70 sub-categories are automatically eligible for K1 (with probation).

9.4 Demerit System
The club will implement a “demerit” system.

Incidents involving K1 participants will be recorded. Incidents to be recorded against the K1 participant will include cases where the K1 participant was involved in some or all of the following: caused an accident, caused damage to their own kart, caused damage to other karts, or caused an injury.

The Main Committee reserves the right to ban the participant from future K1 events.

The Main Committee reserves the right to change the participant’s membership status, or even revoke membership in serious cases.

9.5 Main Committee has Final Say
Eligibility to participate in the K1 series to be officially signed off by the Main Committee of Kelab my-kart Selangor.

10.0 Supplementary Regulations (Technical)

DRIVERS series (K3) rules and formats – 2012

1.0 OBJECTIVES

1.0 OBJECTIVES

The my-KART events aim to popularise grassroots motorsports, particularly karting by making participation in regular karting events accessible and affordable for its members. my-KART realises that there are a significant number of casual and semi-serious karting enthusiasts who would like to have the opportunity to participate in affordable racing events. In doing so, my-KART emphasises safety and fun above all. my-KART also aims at developing the amateur karting community, and thus the group and events will be conducted in a friendly atmosphere.

Given that my-KART events are conducted using primarily rental karts, it is likely that kart performances will vary significantly. The event format that is described below intends to minimise the “luck of the draw” as best possible. my-KART events are also aimed at balancing the skill levels and the kart performance as far as possible.

The purpose of this document is to set out the event formats and rules which meet the above objectives.

2.0 OVERVIEW OF RACE

Typically, the race is split into two segments for each driver and category:
(i) 2 qualifying races – points collected to determine order for choosing karts in final. The qualifying heats are conducted as individual races, and points are scored based on the drivers finishing positions in the qualifying races. By doing so, we do not need to depend on timing systems which can often be unreliable, and this will allow more excitement for participants.

(ii) 1 final – points will score towards the league table. Each driver will participate in one final each, but their groupings will be dependent on how well they scored in the combined qualifying races.

3.0 RACE LENGTH

Each qualifying race and final race will run for 8 laps.

4.0 DRIVER CATEGORIES AND EVENT GROUPINGS

The K3 category will be split into two weight categories:

 1. K3-45 – for drivers above the 45 kg weight up to less than 70kg
 2. K3-70 – for drivers 70kg and above in weight

For the event groupings, the total number of drivers are sorted in seed order. The drivers will be divided into groups of similar numbers. The number of drivers per group depends on the number of reasonably good karts. Consecutive seeded drivers will be split into different groups. Eg, seed 1 in group A, seed 2 in group B and so on.

5.0 QUALIFYING RACE FORMAT FOR EACH CATEGORY

(i) For the 1st qualifying races, karts are assigned to each grid position. For example, kart number 1 may be assigned to grid number 1 and so on. Drivers will be assigned the grid positions based on their seeding order; ie highest seeded drivers start first. In the event of unseeded drivers, the order will be in favour of first registered driver.

(ii) For the 2nd qualifying races, drivers will start in the reverse grid order of the first qualifying. The karts assigned to each grid will remain in the same positions. For example, the driver that started on pole in the first qualifying heat will swap grid position and kart with the driver who started last in the previous heat, and so on.

(iii) change of karts: karts will only be changed if the organisers decide that it is either too slow / damaged / dangerous / too fast (unfair advantage) in comparison with the rest, or if certain drivers cannot fit into certain karts, or if a driver has driven the same kart in the previous qualifying race (applicable only during the qualifying segment).

Points will be scored for each qualifying heat based on finishing positions, and accumulated to determine who gets the first choice of karts for the final. Even drivers who did not finish the qualifying race will still score points based on the ultimate classified position.

Points table (qualifying heats):
Position.....Score

6.0 FINAL FORMAT FOR EACH CATEGORY

Each driver will drive in only one final, although there may be more than one final. The points scored in the qualifying heats will determine which final the driver falls into. If there are odd number of drivers, then the final for top drivers will be more then the lower finals.

The top scoring drivers in qualifying will have first choice to the karts for the final. This will allow the driver who performed best in the qualifying heats the chance to choose the best available karts, and thus eliminate the “luck” factor in their final race. In a tie breaker, the driver with the higher seeding will choose first. If there is still a tie, the driver registered online first will have prior choice.

The starting order for the finals will be in reverse qualifying order (ie, the highest scoring driver in qualifying will start last in the finals – but have the benefit of the better kart). This will further allow drivers who may have had bad karts in the qualifying heats to have another chance to improve on their position for the DRIVERS championship.

7.0 DRIVER WEIGHTS AND THE WEIGHT CATEGORY

Drivers within a category finals would be further sub-ranked within their weight categories. There will be two weight categories for 2012 – which is 70kg minimum and 45kg minimum. Weights are based on drivers own declaration and includes racing gear – from time to time, the my-KART organisers may test the driver weights, and should the drivers weigh less than the minimum limit, then they shall lose all the points scored up to that point, and shall be placed in the more appropriate weight category.

8.0 FEE & PRICING

The pricing for the K3 class will be set by the organisers and is subject to change due to market forces and with minimal notice. Currently the fees for a full K3 event is as follows:

 • K3 (80cc) = RM100 per driver per event

Fees are paid in full upon registration. Only cash is excepted. The fees will not be refunded if the driver does not complete the full event.

ARBITRATION

The my-KART event organisers has the final say.

my-KART 2012 Season Reports

2012 will be the 10th season for my-KART’s amateur karters race series. The 2012 season continues with the two categories – K1 and K3 as per 2011. However, for the K1 category, there will be new specification karts.

With different karts in K1, the competition will be slightly different. The question is, who are the drivers that can sustain the challenge from the 2011 season? In K3, there will be fresh competition and even more hungry new drivers.

This book will capture and collect the various reports from the 2012 my-KART season including the DRIVERS 2012 series races, the my-KART TEAMS series, any once off Endurance events and others.

The DRIVERS series will be a 10 race season that pits driver against driver for 10 challenging rounds. The TEAMS series will be a series based on team work and strategy.

Introduction

It is hoped that this book will be a easy reference for my-KART members to view the race results, reports and some photos.

The chapters in this book is split by the DRIVERS K1 & K3 series and my-KART TEAMS and ENDURO chapters.

Please do give me your feedback which will go a long way towards improving the service to my-KART members further.

What is different in 2012? K1 karts will be with a different specification. All 10 scores will count towards the championship in 2012.

Cheers
