My apologies for the about
My apologies for the about late post. This is my experience at the Yamaha SL Cup 🙂
Thursday: Seat fitting and settling the bills for the new kart. A fairly short procedure but feels kind of long because I was asking too many questions about my first race(I was a wee bit nervous all week lol)
Friday: Its the first official running in and practice session. Really it was a bad day for because I had a food poisoning that day and the rest of the weekend(I don’t poisoned myself Mikko! just a bad meat I think) Because the running in you need to stay your revs around 6-7k rpm, the Yamaha engine tends to vibrate a lot. It didn’t help the stomach so I did a lot of laps in a toilet rather than the track :(. After awhile stuffs inside the stomach had cleared a bit and I can push it more than 8k rpm. I did around 20+ laps? I can’t really remember because of the problematic timing strip at the track. I did my best time at the track in 57 secs(I did 59 in a Birel that I was suppose to buy earlier) but still I’m not satisfied with the run because my concentration keeps on losing, I feel too dehydrated, it was hard to find consistency, really struggling at some corners, turn 4 especially and yes the track didn’t have a lot of grip since I’m the only one running. I blame myself for not concentrating on fitness that much so I paid the price for it.
Saturday: I arrived at the track quite late. I had to see the doctor first to have a medical checkup. Turned out to be food poisoning. It was a usual practice that day, just practicing the lines of the track,
=improving my mistakes and of course consistency. I did improved..just. Really at the end of the day my fitness has taken toll of me. I can’t think that much because I’m too tired, the kart starts
to feel a lot heavier even though I’ve lightened the steering. I did my best time in 56 secs and I’m satisfied with it. The track was grippy too because of the growing numbers of karters were practicing as well I managed to take a look at the drivers that will be competing on Sunday too and well its kind of intimidating because there’s a lot of experienced karters out there!
Sunday: Arrived at Sepang around 8+am, finishing off the registration and waiting for the mechanics to come. Had the driver’s briefing as well and have a look at the people that I will be competing with hehe and I’m the only rookie-noob in the track, oh yeah I remember there was a bloke that can’t figure out racing flags. I’m astonished by it because he looks well equipped but without the sense of safety of other people(he proved it at the 1st heat) Practice session starts at 10am. I think we were given an hour for the practice and I made a full use of it(last minute preparation) still in the 56-57 secs zone 🙁 . Then at 1230pm the qualifying starts, also completed the full session of it. I thought I’ll be last in the quali and hey I got 2nd….last. Did my best my though in 55.4 secs 🙂 the pole sitter clocked it in 54-ish secs. After a long wait for my turn race, the 1st heat is on. I was feeling nervous and excited at the same time. Who wouldn’t? Even the experienced karters would say so. I started quite good at the 1st lap I managed to overtake some people and the ‘flags? what flags?’ bloke hit me from the side and race way too aggresive a pose a danger to other karters in my opinion. I feel like keeping a stone so I can throw him in order for him to behave a bit. Who am kidding with? Its racing! Well I just deal it :). He finished last btw ;). I was about to keep on with the midfield pack but again the fitness! The gap kept getting larger and larger in every lap. I finished 3rd last at the 1st heat and I’m really pleased with that :D. 2nd heat, I think its the most boring part of the day because I drove a lonely race. The highlight for me was overtaking the another guy with outbraking maneuver 🙂 and thats it the fitness kept getting on me :(. I finished 2nd last btw. The Finals! that time I AM too tired to talk, listen, move or anything. The pep talk didn’t help at all because I’m too tired to concentrate, well at least Mikko did help to teach me some few tips. In my mind my head was like ‘Alright let finish this go home and sleep Hanif’. I had a bad start and I can’t keep up with others because the my fitness had reached its limit. I was virtually cruising at the latter stages of the race and I got what I deserved, Last Place and I did worse than 1st and 2nd heat time in 55.6 🙁
My conclusion is I had great fun even though I was tired the whole weekend. I made a lot of friends on-off the track, I have some fans 😀 they keep asking you about the race and kart racing etc, polished my drving skills, being in the competitive scene and racing :D. Personally
I would love to see a lot rookies to participate in the race and the numbers are decreasing in the Round 2. Round 1 drew a lot of new drivers but decided not to compete this time. I would like to see fellow my-karters in the competition too. We should pick which one
of the best driver and pay half of more to make him/her compete in the race 😀 or whoever has their own kart and extra cash, get in! Its the best way to enter a competitive racing with relatively cheap cost(if you have a kart that is) a single race costs you rm1500 if you rent one and I’ve been told Yamaha engine is not a forgiving type.
The next round be in September 20th. I won’t be competing though. Gila Ka? Its fasting month and I rather focus on faith on that month but If you choose to compete, I’ll be there supporting you guys/girls!
Thanks for your time to read my experience. I hope you like it 😀
I forgot to say this .
I forgot to say this . Thanks Mikko for coaching me the whole weekend, the mechanics and last but not least the people who supported me. You know who you are 😉
thanks for long account, i
thanks for long account, i hope u r well now.
its never easy to be driving unwell but we drivers are a tough lot and medicine and some personal ritual help us thru the day…..
Remember you did a one day race ( 3 races )….and if you have to do a 2 or 3 day event, I am sure the toll will be higher. So the message is, work on your fitness.
Anyhow, I think your story will frighten many My-Karters from real racing lar….although I always hope for them to join me.
Hope to see you in the KKS races…Oct, so no puasa to stop u!

lol I do hope they won’t be frighten by the story. I just want to see more rookies than pros in the race. I think they brought the pros for free so they can promote it or just fill up the numbers and yes I’ll be in KKS and my-kart events so I’ll see you there. My-Karters out there jom la racing dengan mereka my-kart boleh!
