Notice this paragraph : “So far, outside of Japan, the region has struggled to produce top drivers, although India’s Narain Karthikeyan has proved the exception.”

So it seems that Alex is not considered a “top driver” even though he is amongst the few Asians to have competed in F1 in the past few years (I count 3 – Sato, Narain & Alex, anymore?).
Interesting statement by the star. In any case, the star has never favoured Alex Yoong. Just look at the coverage of Alex’s exploits during pre-F1, F1 and now A1GP. Hardly anything – save for the recent 2nd place coverage.

Well done Luen! But 1997/98 is going quite far back. I am thinking more like the past 5-6 seasons.

    OSF,

Ross karts very often at Shah Alam – at least last year and I have had runs with him, a few times even with mock races organised by WL on the Rotax.

He has certainly matured from AKOC last year on with some wins here. He competes actively in Macau, Philipines too. Having a Cathay Pacific pilot dad helps….

In my opinion, he is still young and I am not that sure if he is ready for the open wheelers…..just see Ermann Ibrahim in A1, yet another Shah Alam product.

    Time will tell.

Past Japanese F1 drivers? Katayama, Aguri Suzuki are names that come to mind.

Alex’s stint in F1 was overshadowed by a more capable team mate Mark Webber…..hence his lack of publicity esp on local daily.
