ParticipantPERFECT practise makes perfection……no other ways and I dun believe in going in circles unless u just want to impress W&J…..
btw, reading the web is good but you gotta be driving to learn it. ( & prove what u read is rite or wrong cos there’s a lot wrong info too on the www ) Racing is another step all together as driving alone will never teach you RACECRAFT.

Participantwhat i know….theres no such thing as short cuts in racing…the more practice u put in..the better ull be….true?…maybe u can ask sifu to teach u basic lines first..then take it step by step to the next level….haha.

ParticipantJust like all other types of practice, you must practice with a purpose. When u train for a marathon, you will have set times to achieve over specific distances. So in karting, you must have a data logger when you practice. It’s hard work, that’s why I have given up! (sure kena marah by Jules after this statement).

Participant… and also, make sure you practice the correct things… juts like golf..what you practice will eventually become your habbit…

Memberlike many have said here, racing practice is a lot of hard work.
that said, even if you are racing in higher category – karting is still the best (and lowest cost – comparative to other racing categories) way to practice, to get race fit, and to improve under racing conditions.
for race fitness and training in racing conditions, my-kart events are a good start.
but to improve technique the best is to have a dedicated kart. then you can train on consistency. with rental karts it is a bit difficult to be 100% consistent as you are constantly trying to adapt / drive around a particular quirk on the kart.
achieving consistency is perhaps the single most important aspect of kart / race training. without this, there is no way to understand how different braking points / lines / conditions / setups influence your lap times. to get a certain level of consistency requires lots of hours track time… usually these track times are not on all out driving, but something which is comfortable… but not too slack.
to do this, two things i need to be comfortable with… (i) braking vs throttle points and (ii) turn-in points. i would usually go for visual (eg. an odd curb) or tactile markers (eg. bump on the track). once i have found these for each corner, then the idea is to brake > turn-in > throttle at as close to the same points as the lap before.
once the lap times are fairly consistent (within a few tenths of each other), then it is time to experiment with a few variations (one variation at a time)… and then study the lap times again. i guess, if you want to be really serious, then a logbook would be useful. btw, the variations can be in the form of (i) braking points etc; (ii) kart setup; (iii) different techniques.
whilst to me there’s a lot of advise on how to brake etc… i would prefer to first get consistent… and then try new techniques.

ParticipantZul,
I believe you are by now quite familiar with the basics of braking, turn in, throttle up, aim for the apex, use every inch of the road upon exit, yes? The websites are a definite big help but understanding what the experts are talking about and the racing jargon the mat sallehs used is another challenge! There is a lot one can learn by asking (dont be shy – our sifu will understand), watching (I use to do secret videos on a few experts – thanks to my earlier paparazzi training) and attending some of the Rotax or KKS club races, just to watch and time some of the established Malaysian racers……that took about 1 year…for me and junior that is.
So, other than reading, come to CK this Sat, 1 pm thereabout and run practices with us. A few mykarters will be at hand to share whatever we collectively can…Forza my-KART!

ParticipantThanks guys…. yup I know the key word here is PRACTICE (or should I say PERFECT PRACTICE) nothing gonna change that fact and for sure no SHORT CUTS in racing.
PERFECT PRACTICE – SHORT CUTS = CONSISTENT (got that… & GAYA mesti ada ;-D)
Seriously since joining my-kart I found it quite challenging to be consistent… my first intention was to have fun… (u bet I am) but I see that you guys are very passionate about this sport and now I’m HOOKED and can’t wait for the next event.
Ahhh!!…. this Saturday have to go to work (baru balik cuti with family) ….I’ll try to be there tho.

Glad you did make it this afternoon despite a threatening and downcast day, rain was kept at bay…..errr due to the Rain Man’s handiwork, so he claimed..! Hopefully after the few runs on the 80 and 100 cc karts, you can now begin to appreciate the finer aspects of choosing different racing lines and techniques for each of the machine…..and soon on the 125. For now, practice what you have got and remember this hint: turn all cornors into staright lines…hehehe!30 December 2006 at 2:20 pm #3783bosozoku
