Memberalvin,
i don’t want to dampen your spirits, but what jules says is true. at this time, only you can answer your own questions. the rest of the folks here have already given advise. but time and time again, there is another obstacle that you put for yourself… and yet another question posed.
i think you should take a step back and look at your priorities. perhaps you will find an answer. none of us can do this for you.
cheers

ParticipantGuys, looks like the biggest obstable to Alvin is his father. How many F1 and F3 drivers got to where they are without parental support? See how supportive Jenson Button’s dad is? How about our own Alex Yoong and Hanifah Yoong?
Without that, you won’t go far in karting except recreational racers like 99.9% of MyKarters. By the time we make enough money to go serious racing (if ever), we are way pass the prime.
Alvin’s father suggested he didn’t get anywhere for the few hundred dollars spent, he has no idea how much $$$ is needed for karting. If you add up how much one would have spent if one attended ALL MyKart racers in the last 3 years (inclusive of all the enduro), you are looking at somewhere close to RM5,000, and that’s just racing without practice runs.
Alvin, you should consider furthering your studies in KL/PJ/Cyberjaya. You should experience more of life, go after girls, get drunk with your chums. Life without racing ain’t that bad. Look at Azlan, he is happy munching away at races and taking pics of girls. Racing is just a distraction for him :p hehe
Next time you come down to KL, ask someone to take you to the real dangerous place (which is not Shah Alam) and don’t forget to call us to come along π Jules & I will buy you drinks all night π haha

If I had this oppportunity like what my-KART is doing right now 20 over years ago, I’m very sure my father will be very supportive of my participation but not much on financial though. π

Hey, in my younger days, I always dream of being a single seater or rally driver but alas, all that is just a dream as I don’t have a golden mountain.Correct me if I’m wrong, as Alvin is already about twenty, chances of getting a break into sponsored single seater will be just a dream. For that you have to start from very young age unless you are planning to go into saloon car racing. That you have no age limit but depending on how far your financial standing can go.
So for now, all you can do is finish your studies, get good results and start your rat race in the corporate world or better still start your own business.
With the dough that you have made, you can kart, race saloon cars or indulge in any motorsport that you like unless you get married early and the home minister don’t give a toot what motorsport is all about.(my home minister hmmmmrrrpppphhhh me when I say I have a race this 2 Dec 06)
Take your time, don’t be discouraged just becos your dad don’t allow you to race now. The time will come, take karting as a hobby to practise your reflexes for bigger motoring sports.
If cannot wait, then earn some money in your spare time or semester break, then come and join us.

Not that I’m asking you to leave your family, you might have to leave your family for further studies or for a career one day. The world outside is very different then you what you are getting at home.
Outside, you have to find your own way to cari makan, live within your own budget unlike now where you have meals prepared for you every evening.30 November 2006 at 5:22 pm #3396alvinkhorfire

Well, I never neglect my studies at all. I am doing well in my engineering studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia. All what I am asking is striking a balance between karting and studies. My dad is an average guy. He has housing loan instalments, plenty of utility bills and other debts to settle. He is just making the ends meet. So, I rarely ask him to pay for my track fee. Occasionally, he paid for some of the fee. Most of the time, the track fees come from my own pocket. I try not to burden him anyway. I am not like any teens. I don’t have PS2, trendy clothes, Walkman or expensive handphone. I am just saving every money so that I can go karting. I don’t mind my life is kind of boring. It is just my devotion to karting.Computer game?Yeah, I have the same view with you. I occasionally play the EA Sports F1 2002. But I still cannot play without any driving aids because the computer racers are too fast for me to catch up with.

I am not good on this, but if I get it wrong on speculation of stock market, I could lose a lot of money. But, you are right on one thing. for so many, I have been stuck in Taiping with no karting track. Even the nearest kart track is at Ipoh, 1 hour away from my home. I have to leave my comfort zone and make some changes in my life.Jules
Asking the god to predict my life is my dad’s idea. Let’s just say that my dad has just virtually done everything to stop me from karting, including using HIS own money to ask the God. I believe in God, like all of us do. But I doubt this prediction is entirely correct. Yes, maybe I will be paralysed because of karting, but asking me quit even before I give everything I have is wrong. The prediction on general life problem is correct but the prediction on karting is not correct.“behind the desk karter”? You are right, through. But at times, I have “forced” my dad to take me to 3 basic go-kart courses, PanGlobal Alex Yoong F1 Driver Search and my-Kart Race. Jules, the problem I have with my Dad and being “behind the desk karter” are the reasons why karting is not for me. Am I right?
Thanks for the coaching offer. Still, I am not able to come down to Shah Alam. And if I do, I don’t think it is nice for someone of high racing skill like you to coach someone like me who is obviously still not good in kart racing. I believe that you all are very helpful and patient to me. I could not be more thankful to you all.

Yes, you are right. All these years, I am pushing myself to kart racing. And, no much success has been achieved. Now, my family especially my Dad keeps pushing me down. What more can I say? Like some of you may think, it is better for us racers to be born into family with rich motorsport experience. But, we can’t change our fate, can we?I understand that my Dad was trying to protect me from harsh reality outside. But I donΓ’β¬β’t suppose I cannot race go-kart at all because of that.
My dad thought that the money was not well spent. It is because there are people who are fast learners and they can straight away race very fast. Since I am a slow learner, he said I am not cut for racing. Nevertheless, no matter how slow I learn, if I put effort in it, I will gradually improve.
Nohad
Yes, I am 21. Do you remember that you and I agreed on 1 thing on the Pitstops Forum that we live for once and should live to the fullest? So, I want to race kart whenever I can.Yes, anywhere is dangerous. But, the risk is certainly higher at Klang Valley. I feel no matter how much money I have, my Dad will not allow me to come.

Nohad and me are fathers……so we can understand what your dad is doing.
I think my young drivers talk with a more maturity, direction, focus, sense than you, and I mean its not just on karting topic. So i think its not just the lack of karting skills you have here and maybe you father knows what’s missing and hence protecting you.
Think about it.

Acutally it is a good case study for us dad being. Think about it, you will definately be delighted when your kids say they want to pursue dad’s dream but what about otherwise?
Alvin, true for most of them saying, the ultimate answer lies within you, we are not encouraging you go against your dad. However there certain cost of actions that you would need to take of convincing your dad. How? only you know, nobody can advise. No matter how My-karters tried to guide ,in many ways as too there are boundaries.
Show us your determination, We looking forward meeting you on 2nd December 2006. Free lesson?? Let’s talk on that day

Participantshah alam is dangerous when the mat rempits hang around during the weekend … (god i hate those pesky pests) … particularly at the city center … and yes … the stadium too …
other than that … i think it’s the safest place to be … (i’ve been living here for more than 20 years … lolz)

ParticipantThanks for your comment. I am just being general on things like being robbed. Well, you have to be prepared for all kind of situation you may face. In short, I just want to be more careful if I am at Klang Valley.
Note: Anyone who has posted to me , please wait for my reply in about 4-6 days. I am a social internet surfer who surf once or twice per week. Anyway, I will certainly reply to those concerned. Thank you for your patience.

ParticipantHey dude, I know this is a late post but I can’t help but budding in some comments of my own. I’ve been MIA from My-Kart for 1 year (shit.. has it been that darn long?)
anyhows, what i wanna say is.. live your own life.. I’m not telling you to go against your father, but just take note that he isn’t going to live your life until the day you die (that is with good hopes that the Gods give you longevity in your life)
Well, everyone here has the burning desire to race professionally. Come on, lets be honest, ask anybody in My-Kart, I bet you 60% if given the opportunity wouldn’t be in F1 kicking Alex Yong’s butt without being listed in http://www.f1rejects.com
But reality is, you are still young. Your life is still far ahead. You’ll have to live a real life, working for a living before you can dream dreams dude. When you do make big bucks and can support a nation, then maybe you can think of racing as a profession or for passion. Think about it, Karamjit Singh didn’t even get the support from ANYONE in getting his car back and yet, he still wins races and championships. (if you get my drift, you can be the next schumi and yet go unnoticed and unappreciated)
Also, you might be 40-50.. but you can still race in F1.. like Nissany (do you know who is this guy? I bet not) he is 44, and was Minardi’s test driver…So what I’m trying to say here is.. keep your hopes up… you know karting/racing of any sort will cost you an arm or a leg or worse your darn life but if you really want it.. you can get it… all you have to do is patience.. and just live your life. Hey.. do you know what’s gonna happen tomorrow? if you do.. then y not buy 6D for the next draw and end your misery for not being able to race professionally…
cheer up dude. Least you get guidance from good sifu’s like Jules and such.. I didn’t even get such nice treatments from them… and.. I’ve to work for a living.. I can’t even afford petrol to work.. nor lunch.. bla bla bla… well.. you are still young.. presevere.
PRESEVERE!!! I hope to hear you in the papers being a race champion sometime down the road!!
while I be sweeping floors/tarmacs thinking what life would bring..
o yeah.. RM30,000 from 4D can buy you 1 race suit(nomax), 1 shoes (puma/omp nomax) 1 nice good helmet, and can invest the remainder in a car for MME… 1 RACE is all you gonna get..

Yo bro! where have you been hibernating or doing secret training?
4 January 2007 at 6:14 pm #3825Tarmizi
Participantback to the original topic…actually 15k is enough already for a kart and racing gear…just that u got to know where, what and from whom to buy or spend your money…. but cost of practice is different. true enough?
6 January 2007 at 5:32 pm #3843alvinkhorfire
ParticipantThanks. It was not late. I am not young anymore. I already have 11 years of age disadvantage and am not even having any fraction of success that any kart racers have. Being the next schumi? Well, any my-kart member will be more qualified than me to be the next schumi. Presevere…. that is the best I can do now. I am currently driving go-kart at Manjung Karting Circuit.
http://www.pitstop.com.my/forum/topic.asp?whichpage=14&TOPIC_ID=2368꒏The cost there is much lower and I am trying to lower my lap times.
Thanks, Joey for your advice.
