ParticipantMikko: are u the mikko working with BELL helmet malaysia?
For those who wants to get a SNELL certified, ensure you buy those with SA2005 helmet or else FIA would no longer accepting race drivers to use SA2000 helmets.
lots of vendors clearing up SA2000 at very reasonable price (but still not very reasonable to me)
Difference between SA, M and K (taken from SMF.org)
What are the differences between the SA, M and K standards?
SA Standard was designed for auto racing while M Standard was for motorcycling and other motorsports. There are three major differences between them:1. SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not;
2. SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets may not be street legal);
3. SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.
4. The K standards are very similar to the SA standards, however the K standards omit the requirements for flame retardency.4 October 2006 at 10:35 pm #3157naza

….and here is what the recently completed Malaysian ROK series says:

• British Standards Institution A-Type and A/FR-type BS 6658-85, including amendments.
• SFI Foundation Inc., Spec. SFI 31.1 and 31.2 (USA)Any idea when is the cut off date for SA 2000 certified hemets…….haiyah! rugi woh!

ParticipantMikko is local rep and distributer of Bell helmets, so a good price and service assured. For those serious about safety and looks, Bell are worthwhile look if you want non Jap options.
SA2000 ended in 2005, as I know it…..it goes for 5 years. So now, the thing to look for is SA2005.
Guys, all this standards and years matter only if you race seriously. Even then, my SA2000 is still useable so it depends how strict the organisers want to enforce it….

Participantguess for occasional weekend not-so-serious karting, I should be fine with my cheapo M2000 imitation helmet… 🙂

Yeah bell helmets from me :)….
SA2000 can be used in pretty much any FIA car racing series worldwide until end 2010, and in Malaysian series for karting and cars most likely easily until 2015, so buying a SA2000 helmet now is not a problem, no point worrying about a cut-off date. The first SA2005 became available late last year.
The difference in actual requirements for a helmet to pass the certification for SA2000 and SA2005 for the helmets is very small, you can read about it on the smf website in detail.
The most important thing in helmet safety though is helmet FIT. I’ve seen on a few occasion perfectly good quality helmets (ARAI GP5 and SPARCO) fly off karter’s heads in a crash because they were too big (strap was done up). A poorly fitting FIA-8860 (F1 driver requirement, standard worked out with SNELL) will be worse than a perfect fit cheapo aral, skoei, etc helmet. Having said that you won’t know what a “perfect fit” helmet is until you’ve tried a good quality helmet that fits your head shape and is your size.

check here for a comparison of the bike standards Snell M2000, BSI 6658-85 Type A, DOT, and EN22-05.
just have a read around the articles on the Snell website, I remember spending hours on that site going through the different stuff, quite interesting :).

Did you had any difficulties everytime when you wear your OMP formel 4 helmet esp. the chin strap? I had difficulties adjusting it compared to my old one..

The chin strap material is a trifle soft and “smooth”(the material) than my NOLAN helmet. So when you pull to tighten, it is a little bit difficult to estimate how much to stop pulling. Over time, I “learn” how much to tighten and have no other complaints thus far (Tarmizi has no complaints of this nature). Anyway, we can talk more about this on the 4th huh?
