Zahir Ali
Zahir AliIndonesian Zahir Ali (20/Team TARADTM) clinched the Driver Classification today in the final round of the 2007 Formula BMW Asia series, while South African Formula BMW Junior Kyle Mitchell (16/Eurasia Motorsport) won the Rookie Cup title after a superb final showdown with fellow Junior Hong Kong’s Ross Jamison (17/CIMB Team Qi-Meritus).
After Round 22, and following receipt of a post-race scrutineering report, Race Stewards issued a Decision to exclude the cars of Jazeman Jaafar (MAS/CIMB Team Qi-Meritus) and Jack Lemvard (THA/CIMB Team Qi-Meritus) for a technical infringement of the regulations.Γ In view of the severity of the offence and the fact that the same team had contravened the Technical Regulations on an earlier occasion during the season, the Decision also included the exclusion of CIMB Team Qi-Meritus from the Formula BMW Asia Series 2007.
The Decision put Malaysian teenager Jazeman 2nd in the Driver Classification at the end of the season, just one point behind Ali.Γ James Grunwell (18/THA/CIMB Team Qi-Meritus), like Ali completing his second Formula BMW Asia season, finished 3rd in the Driver Classification, with Rookie Cup winner Mitchell 4th.

ParticipantAlonso to join Renault in 2008
Friday October 12, 2007
BERLIN, (AFP) – The double Formula One world champion Fernando Alonso will leave McLaren-Mercedes and return to Renault next year, the German newspaper Bild will report in its Friday edition.Alonso has signed a contract for three years from 2008 with Renault where he won his two world championships before moving to McLaren-Mercedes in 2007. However, in last few months, Alonso’s relations have deteriorated badly with the McLaren team of Ron Dennis and in particular with British team mate Lewis Hamilton.
Alonso finished second in Sunday’s Chinese Grand Prix and is now just four points behind the championship leader, Hamilton, heading into the final race of the season in Brazil. π
Looks like 2008 gonna be more interesting ey.. π

Wurz announces retirement from Formula One competitionWilliams driver Alexander Wurz has confirmed that he is to retire from Formula One racing with immediate effect. The team will announce his replacement for the season-ending Brazilian Grand Prix on Tuesday.
Wurz made his Formula One debut in 1997 with Benetton in Canada, since which time he has driven for McLaren and most recently Williams, as test driver in 2006 before taking on a race seat for the 2007 season.
βI would today like to announce my retirement from active racing in Formula One,β said the 33-year-old Austrian, who has recently become a father for the third time. βI would like to thank my family and fans, everyone at AT&T Williams and my previous teams, as well as the media, for all of their support during my Formula One racing career.β
In ten seasons, Wurz has made 69 Grand Prix starts, with his most recent visit to the podium coming earlier this year in Canada. He has scored 13 points in 2007, but has struggled to match team mate Nico Rosberg, particularly in qualifying.
βIn such a hard fought environment as Formula One, I have always maintained that if you have a momentβs doubt about what you are doing, then it is time to stop,β continued Wurz. βPrivately I began to have these thoughts earlier this year and so have decided that now is the time to make my announcement.
βRacing this season has been a real pleasure, especially securing the podium in Canada which was pretty sweet along with a number of other strong races, but now it is time to call it a day. Iβd like to thank the team for accepting my decision and I wish them all the best for the last race of the year.β
He concluded: βI look forward to my future and perhaps the opportunity to pass on my knowledge and skills in Formula One and I have some discussions underway. I may also race again, perhaps in Le Mans or other categories and certainly some of my time will now be committed to the very important subject of road safety.β
In response to Wurzβs announcement, team principal, Frank Williams said: βAlex has made an invaluable contribution to the team for the past two years, first as one of the best test and development drivers the team has ever worked with, and more recently as a race driver.
βThis season Alex has had some very strong drives in difficult circumstances and we would like to thank him for all he has contributed. Alex is well known, immensely popular and widely regarded as one of Formula Oneβs gentlemen. I am sure I speak for everyone in the paddock when I wish Alex and his family the very best for the future.β
Hmm… another rookie driver? Jazeman? π
