Will confirm soon after touch down – 25th April.
Cheers,
JulesJules
ParticipantPads for this special brake wun be cheap…..u have been forewarned.
Sorry JJ, just my 2 cents!
Jules
ParticipantBrudder Fazz,
Way to go & whilst I have been a bit quiet – I am willing to assist where I can contribute. OSF should also be part of this….OSF, you hearing this?
Keep me posted ok.
Jules
ParticipantJust to keep all posted…..the Modenas engine went back to their factory…..for evaluation & stripping down.
I was told by Wai Leong that the conrod, 2nd & 4th gear are also worn off. Likely reason = inferior material.
The engine was from their DINAMIK model, so yes Modenas does make 2 stroke engines. Pls see their web site.
Cheers.
Jules
ParticipantHINDSIGHT( rite spelling ah? )…..is seldom wrong!
Yes, we see this also in MyKart rite? Brian & Steward flying over each other rite?
Jules
Participanted,
u can test provided I ( or Fazz later ) am present & consent that you can handle it.
btw, you dun need to be fast to blow up the shifter….MEGA revs in wrong gear and slow speed ( due to wrong gear ) will – just like your car.
bikers with clutch experience will find this easier.
Jules
ParticipantGuys ( OSF & Fazz ), I appreciate the active discussion & contribution here.
Fazz, yes there is a class called ICC, and the one I drove before did not have a shirt light or rev-limiter. Brian E could also share his input cos he drove shifters in USA.
OSF, not sure-lah abt the shift light on the RM1…..can ask. But you are also very correct to say….if driver do not see it, it’s also pointless.
For this kart, you PUSH down to shift up…1 to 2, to 3, etc etc. The opposite for downshifting….ie. 6 to 5 to 4 etc etc.
I was also thinking about this, rev limiter cuts in when upshifting but does it cuts in if you downshift wrongly into the wrong gear? I doubt so rite? Car sifus, pls share.
We should sit down and give our comments in unison to Uncle cos as an individual, banyak susah……
Thanks again & yes OSF, you will drive again….with me around 1st! LOL! & for any newbies I will follow in the 100cc also as an added security. Okie?
Cheers!
Jules
ParticipantFazz, OSF,
I agree that a rev-limiter is best solution ( even if it’s for a private kart ownership ) but we will be on new ground here….at least for karts, it will be a 1st ( have not seen one in my Rotax…) and I am not aware if the car units can take the pounding, vibration, heat, water ( it’s exposed mah ) etc.
Am not aware of cost of such unit, so maybe some of you know. To re-built an engine is one thing…..maybe a few hundred bucks but it is timely as well, since running in is required after installation.
In short, I would push for a rev-limiter installation as then the market is unlimited……and MyKart can hire them! (without having to pay deposits for damages etc etc etc aiyah……)
Siewweng – it is a real racer, believe me & there’s a shift lever, clutch as well.
Jules
ParticipantRookie,
Great video clips and the shifting can be clearly heard…..Guys,
To be fair to the kart, I was TOLD that OSF used only 1st 2 gears when there were 6….over-revving for 2km would kill anything. Was not there in time to brief him unfortunately, so my error in some parts. The kart requires some minor sorting out but nothing major.
Whatever, it does require some technique to drive this properly and there’s no need to over-revving. ( pls hear the video ) Counting thru the gears while listening for the engine revs going up & down is a MUST. Otherwise, please look at TACHO!
OSF can verify that I suggested a REV limiter to prevent similar damage but this will add to cost. At that point, it was not well received. I proposed since one idea was to make these machines available for hire and will be open to over-revving mistakes/abuse. ( think of running 10 side by side…..at the start line & u get my drift… )
Blaming is easy then and it wun solve anything for the sake of the sport – hence the R&D now.
Jules
ParticipantTips on driving? Aiyah will tell u in detail when you test it-lah….both of u.
Fundamentally, U gotta remember the gears for each corners and all DOWN shifting done in the straightline ( while braking ) – a bit like a car on track.
For this kart, push to upshift, pull to downshift…..and no need overrev engine when upshift…
Rev limiter? your ears….so dun blow engine woahhh! No shift lite, or gear position okie – all those want to ask. ( norm for even the ICC world class karts )
Fazlur corner….aha, must be the one he spun at last race …LOL Ouch Ouch 🙂
Jules
ParticipantDELETED – double posted again….sigh!
Jules
ParticipantSorry bro for the double posting….did recall I had some problems on one occassion.
Anyway, forgot to add…..I hit 11000+rpm with the Modenas….OUCH!
Jules
ParticipantJJxMan, ( Joey??)
Glad u tried it but being an experimental kart……sure things break off or down…so try to look from that point of view.
In regards to the heat and engine being in the way……it’s a bike aircooled engine so the the engine is bigger than normal cos of the air fins. we cannot push the engine back, cos then the head will be at your elbow. At present position ( & with all the ignition coil, fuel pump lowered ) it’s okay.
Honestly, I do not feel any heat at all – can even rest my hand on heat WHILE driving & shifting…..so relaxing. Of course, I wear a full suit for this, so no burn or heat problems…..& I say this from the 15 laps I did in one go.
It does not matter if water cool or not cos it’s for a function & not for looks also and more things you have, more maintenance and more things to break. The heat problem on your seat, can be solved locally.
Performance wise, a Rotax has 28hp, this one maybe 18-20hp at most. Rotax RM9000 now, this one, maybe we try to get at RM3000. Less 50% power but 66% cheaper…..!!! When I talk about spares for Rotax in comparision to Modenas, no need to talk further….get my drift?
Last of all, laptimes….the 4 lap demo I did revealed a 1min 02 sec lap. ( my mech…59 sec – he terror mah! ). My Rotax lap 54 sec…..yes, it’s not so fast but it’s not the lap times that matter most – it’s the fun while doing it and when we race this….everyone also the same & in the pack. By chance, how was your lap times?
In detail to your comment like burn lining, wire, overheating, engine too big – I can answer like this….they can be solved for the 1st 2 items, not true for overheating and engine too big? then u say no power if we use a 80cc…so how?
We have to be specific, objective driven & realistic, when we push a new idea….and not to forget give it development time & be persistent.
Hope MyKarts guys ride along this wave with me…..
I tried the Modenas 115 cc kart today. was given the liberty to RIDE UNTIL I’M BORED OR IT BREAKS DOWN. unfortunately, it broke down. Seems like there are lots of problem. First and foremost, it’s damn slow, slower than the 125cc kart. For a shifter I mean. Well, there might be some power in and out of the corners (since it’s shifter) but no pickup power like the rotax max 125.
The engine has no cooling system, which was burning my right bum. Of course, when I’m riding all the way, pulling in the revs, who cares, you’d only feel the 3rd degree burn when you’re pitting in. 😛
Also, the engine mounting is too front. You can’t drive it normally. Your arms have to be in a weird sorta angle to avoid from getting burnt by the engine. Also, the whole components are unsupported, meaning, we’d be just putting an engine into a kart. It’s not feasable as lotsa problem will rise like burnt lining, wire, overheating, engine too big.
In the end, good for a Malaysia to set up own karting team, like K1 in MotoGP, but still, long way to go in being competitive and being acceptable by the Karting community.
Likewise, I thnk it’s a fun thing to drive. There’s a handclutch and of course, when you hear that in a McLaren we’d use a hand clutch, we’d suddenly feel like we’re Kimi or Montoya.
Long Live McLaren!
Long Dream Modenas!
Jules
ParticipantJJxMan,
Sponsorship do not need to come in the form of funds, but can be in subsidised or FOC – parts crew support & logistic, as well. I can see Citykarting in contributing somewhere in the last three – if you are serious enough.
Think out of the box, I am always reminded!
Jules
ParticipantOSF,
U went wake boarding-leh that day…..& cuci mata too I heard! Hope that dun dilute ur karting interest…hoi! U wanna test shifter….can, but TT on u! ke! ke!Jason,
So modest one-lah u……yes, point taken on the steering which I also mentioned. The lever was NOT STANDARD and was bent previously, hence it now interferes with steering. We tried to fixed that later in the day but not to my satisfaction yet. Will keep u all posted.
