You think the D300 will be available by then? Do you want to be the official Team Malaysia photographer and the official KartingAsia.com photographer? If yes let me know and I’ll make sure you get a media pass so you can go track-side for pictures… if you do that I’m sure there’ll be a shirt somewhere. 🙂

Anyway, on the same issue, my only concern is that a lot have been said which made TonyKart #5 look rather bad without actually knowing what actually happened. It may not have been deliberate on his part or he may have thought that a little bumping is acceptable.
Mind letting us know who you are?

In round 1 he took me off with a very late move and got a 10 second (I think) penalty for it. After that he told me “You better watch out next time”…….. then last race he blatantly kept trying to run me off the track by intentionally crashing into me (I was going sideways tyres locked up into the chicane for about 3 laps because he was pushing from behind, even though he could’ve driven around either side).

If threatening by saying “you better watch out next time” and then bumping on purpose is considered fair game by you then you’re following the wrong sport.

I know exactly what happened, I was there. If I wanted to I could’ve had him penalized because a kks official came to tell me he saw it and told me that was too much… instead I just had a quiet word with the officials requesting them to pay more attention to the driver in question. imo the way he was driving could’ve justified a 1-year suspension of his license, and I’m not the only one that thinks so. If you feel different that’s ok, you’re entitled to your opinion.

OK now, show of hands from my-karters who is considering racing in the Rotax Max Challenge next year?
congrats to both drivers on the achievement…
the world finals…will be in Dubai Kartdrome or in Al-Ain??
Al-Ain… I think for the grand finals they like to say “dubai” because it’s a lot better known internationally… even though dubai is a good 100km++ away.

The 3+ old kart you were on got slower and slower as the race progresses? Could it be that the kart is less flexible causing it to “dig” in the cornors?
I don’t know about all the technical details but I know that the main problem with old chassis’ is that they over-grip on corner exit on the back of the kart and bog down the engine. The thought as you said is that the metal “crystallizes” and becomes brittle and doesn’t flex as well – then again others say that it flexes too much – but all agree that performance of a chassis over time fades away. This is why top drivers with the budget might go through 5 or more chassis during a karting season.

I had a kart a few years ago that was good for 1 lap and one lap only – I could qualify it at the front of the grid but by lap 10 I’d be back in 10th place with laptimes 1.5sec off my qualifying times. :O
The way out is possibly to use softer axle?
We were trying everything to go get grip out of the back – soft axle, shorter soft axle, short rear hubs, lower ride height etc. etc…. since none of that was working we decided to go for a hard axle for the pre-final and went with an even harder one for the final which helped even more, I only started going slower out of the corners after about 15 laps rather than 5-8. It’s the opposite of what I thought would work but it did. It’s possible that we weren’t generating enough grip in the back tyres to lift the inside-rear which in turn caused the bog and the harder axle helped this while the softer axles just made it worse. 🙂

Congrats to the champions in all categories, the Juniors went incredibly close!

My weekend was not too great. Qualified 2nd, 0.03 behind 1st and 0.001 ahead of 3rd (top 5 qualified within 1 tenth!!). In heat 1 I got slower and slower as the kart bogged down out of the corners the further the race went and eventually ended up in 7th I think.

Heat 2 on Sunday got pushed back at the start a bit and ended up in 11th with no pace to get up any further really.

Set-up changes for the pre-final meant that the kart was fast for longer and I was able to get into 6th and then get repeatedly rammed by an eager kid who didn’t have his father at the track (he drives clean when his dad is watching)… and then got taken out by the aggressive championship leader on the last lap – he lost any hope of taking the championship there.

Final I did what I could from 22nd on the grid up to 8th by the end of the race, recording the 3rd fastest laptime, and having a lot of fun overtaking!

The reason for the performance being good during the first few laps and then fading off was because I was on a fairly old chassis (3+ years old), so it bogs down the engine out of the corners when grip levels are high…. new chassis next year. 😉

thanks dude.. will definately look into it..
i actually found another one.. which is adobe bridge
the problem is it’s not very customizable – editing the photos later is a pain.. uploading pics isn’t that great.. you can’t change the layout later on all your galleries because all the files are html.. trust Gallery 2 is a completely different system! I tried the adobe thing a few years ago and it was a pain – I’m sure it’s better now but it does nothing like what Gallery or other photo album softwares do.

If something like the adobe system has enough features then I’d recommend using Google Picasa and it’s upload system and galleries. 😕

Got mysql database access and php?

    Get:
    Gallery 2

Makes uploading photos a breeze. You can upload directly from the website as single files or a bunch of files in one zip-file. You can also use an application which allows you to upload pictures in a drag-drop style and caption them and gallery can also automatically resize and watermark the pictures. There’s nothing better than Gallery 2 imo, and I’ve tried a bunch.

Installation of the software is also easy and it’s fairly simple to integrate into a site.
can we do a purchasing power parity comparison of karting costs in different countries? let’s compare to (say) how many big macs it would take to run an 80cc 2-stroke for 10minutes.
Most places worldwide don’t run 80cc 2-stroke rental karts….. but anyways….

The good rental place in Finland I was talking about – 10mins in their main rental karts costs 5.3333 Big Macs for non-members, member price is 3.2 big macs and I believe you can become a member instantly at a cost of under 3 big macs a year.

For kids in lower CC karts the prices are at least 1 big mac cheaper.

Would you pay 60-70% more for QUALITY(see below)? I think many my-karters would, but the general public in Malaysia probably nope.
maintain bares down to business operators… as i have said… even coming frmo a first world country like australia… karts are NOT well maintained at ALL frankly because this is how business operators maximise profits…

all i have to say is “bravo” to that business owner…. who wants to maintain a high lvl of standard and customer expectations… maybe that place could be an academy for serious gokarters?? to be fair, there should be other things to ask before jumping in conclusion, which is, how long has the business been in business for?
Lots of good points there and you’re right in saying “bravo to that business owner.” For every one great rental kart place in finland there are a few average ones. There are maybe 3 really really good indoor rental kart places. When I say good I mean really good – suits are provided for sure and the helmets are usually good enough that my-karters would want to buy them. Helmets are placed on a cooling rack so no sweaty helmets. Clean balaclavas are provided and you throw your used ones in the wash basket. Timing is displayed either on the steering wheel or somewhere visible on the track so after every lap you know your laptime. As soon as you jump out of the kart after a session you’re handed a lap-chart printout.

The karts have the ability to put weight in the kart to get to a minimum 80kg for driver weight – lap records only count if you had weight in the kart so you don’t have to wonder if the lap record was set by some 40kg cadet karter.

There is a full-on proper waiting area/restaurant with expensive furniture and a bunch of TVs showing 4+ different channels and of course F1 when that is on, and of course the laptimes of the drivers currently on track, as well as the feed from a few cameras position around the track. For corporate events there are high-tech conference rooms and saunas!

If you’re a first-time driver you get a good 2+ minute safety and general briefing. If you stop on track the operators will SPRINT to you to get you out of trouble – mechanical failures on track are pretty much unheard of so it’s really them just pushing you back so you can get going again.

The indoor rental kart places are of course primarily geared towards the general public – non serious kart racers and of course corporate events. But you have to remember that Finland is a motorsports crazy place and a lot of their customers are very experienced in going to other rental kart places, so they know when they’ve got it good. Also a LOT of proper kart racers go to the indoor karting place – during the winter! Guys that race proper race karts during the summer won’t be content with crap rental karts… they’ll pay a bit more for quality.

Also Finland has a lot of kart racers – and when Mr.Joe Average thinks he’ll take his family karting and he has a kart racer friend of course that kart racer friend will tell him to go to the best place. Being crap gets you a crap reputation real fast.

I’m building a track database on KartingAsia.com and this thread has confirmed that I’ll include a review-commenting system for each track… so that anyone that has rented karts there can post reviews. Hopefully it can at least provide operators with ideas where to improve.

I haven’t tried many of the rental karts at the various tracks in a while but…..

For me using the citykarting 100cc karts which I do about once a year or so I actually like that the karts different. 🙂 You never quite know what the kart is going to be like so you and have to adapt your driving style to suit it. 😎

The most evenly matched karts I ever tried was at an indoor rental place in Finland – the difference between the best and the worst kart was only ever about 3 tenths on fairly long lap. They were that way because they were meticulously maintained – the main thing was that you could hardly ever feel a difference in the handling of the different karts.

When the kart rental operators are lazy (like most are, and pretty much all places in Malaysia) the alignment is never checked and parts are only replaced when they break and cleaning of the karts is unheard of you get karts that are way off any kind of setup.
marshalls will be good but we need volunteers.
Yeah that’s what I meant – drivers that aren’t racing in say K3 can be marshals during the K3 race. That’s how club-level racing is done in many places.
my comments on stopping is based on this scenario…..someone trapped under the kart and NO ONE IN SIGHT to help the poor driver!!!

I saw someone running towards Lynda
If my-karters are willing there is nothing preventing having say ~3 guys with yellow flags at various points at the far ends of the track during races.. and then they can run over for their race once the race has finished. Or perhaps it’s better to make it 3 groups of 2 so that everyone has a chatting-buddy and if there’s an accident that needs help the yellow flag is still there while the other guy runs out. The “stadium” section of the track could have a yellow flag as well and there are lots of people there.

imo stopping if you already see someone else going to the accident scene would not be smart and is more likely to cause more problems than anything.
