[b]Team TeleVAS Racing join forces with TOC (The Otomotif College) in a Bid to Identify Young Talent[/b]

[b]04 Oct 2009[/b] – Shah Alam Circuit – With 38 drivers on the qualifying grid in 3 different groups the battle for a seat in the final of the first ever TOC Go Kart Challenge began.

Team TeleVAS were invited by TOC to evaluate and select TOC drivers to be shortlisted for the forthcoming time trial where 5 lucky drivers will be selected to drive for Team TeleRookies in the December my-KART 8 Hours Mega Endurance race.

The day started smoothly with a safety briefing and racing tips conducted by Team TeleVAS TP, Mark Timms, following which the first of three groups started the qualifying race. Throughout the 3 qualifying races, the evaluation panel comprising of Mark, Zul, Ramsey and Desmond, were stationed at various locations on the track monitoring track ethics, skill, control and most importantly safety.

The final race saw 15 drivers on the grid who qualified from their respective groups. Again, the evaluation panel monitored the drivers. The overall winner of the race was Ezreen Edzwan b Jamaluddin.

The evaluation panel shortlisted 6 drivers in total who will now go through to the time trial evaluation where they will go head to head with shortlisted drivers from Session 1 evaluation held last week on 27 September and the forthcoming driver selection on 11 October.

Congratulations to all the drivers who took part. The panel was hard pressed to choose drivers as it was noted that every driver who attended the briefing paid great attention and applied what they had learnt on the track, demonstrating great control and skill and most importantly an incident free race.

Today, 27th Sep 2009, saw the first of the driver talent searches with the following 11 drivers participating:-

The format was run with a classroom briefing and safety session followed by an instructor led formation where participants demonstrated the ability to follow the instructors direction and fall out of formation and regroup at the back of the grid, during which time they learnt to handle the kart at a slow pace and gradually gain momentum, whilst maintaining a racing line position on the track. The first schedule was cut slightly short due to a heavy downpour of rain. Nonetheless, each rookie driver controlled their kart well in the wet and returned safely to the pits.

Whilst waiting for the rain to subside a Q&A session and debriefing was conducted and the second formation was later assembled, this time all drivers running on wet tyres on a very wet track. Desmond led the group for the first few laps and it must be noted that he did so using slick tyres 😉

Congratulations to all the drivers for taking part. I am sure I am not alone in saying this, but the skill, competence and ethical driving demonstrated by the group today has certainly left the evaluation panel with some very tough decisions to make.

We received a welcome bonus from City Karting today as well. Wai Leong (racing champion, team owner and track operator) has kindly volunteered to take on the role of Team Manager for the newly formed TeleRookies. With this, you can be assured of receiving the best possible advice and knowledge needed to win a race! Thank you to Wai Leong and City Karting.

I’d also like to thank Ramsey, Zul, Luen, Desmond, Patrick and Rizal for helping with the event format and evaluation and Lynda and Emily for the organisation and admin.

Looking forward, we will be at the ToC event next week and also conducting another evaluation session on 11 October.

Lastly, we also look forward to seeing the drivers who have attended today’s session to come and join the my-kart races, the next one being on 3rd October 2009!

Hi mebrahim,

the cost all depends on what you are looking for. A good entry level helmet such as SOL could set you back around RM300+ or an Arai could be as much as RM2k upwards! Likwise suits such as the Indonesian brand which is quite OK could be as little as RM350 or an Alpinestars can be as much as RM800 upwards!

If you are new to karting, I’d strongly recommend some fun karting first using rental karts. You can familairise yourself with general karting techniques and initially just wear protective clothing such as jeans, long sleeve shirt and the operator will supply the helmet (and hair net usually). If you enjoy it and want to take it the next level then start shopping around for whatever bargains are avaialble. Often members will post up accessories for sale in this forum.
