ParticipantJEREZ (Spain): BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld was fastest Thursday at Formula One’s penultimate test before the start of the season, and world champion Lewis Hamilton’s day was cut short by a low-speed crash.
Heidfeld set a fastest lap time of 1 minute, 20.052 seconds from a session-high 123 laps as the five-day test at the Jerez Circuit wrapped up amid strong wind and rain.
“The ever changing weather made it quite difficult to do continuous work,” said Willy Rampf, the German team’s technical coordinator. “Nevertheless we achieved the main targets of our development program.”
Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen finished more than 0.3 seconds behind Heidfeld for second, while Hamilton, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, Williams’ Kuzuki Nakajima and Toyota’s Jarno Trulli rounded out the field.
Hamilton was more than 1.2 seconds slower than his German counterpart from 58 laps after a sudden gust of wind swept his McLaren car into a tire barrier. Hamilton’s day ended because of damage to the car’s rear.
Next week’s four-day test at the Circuito de Catalunya at Barcelona is the teams’ last chance to test before the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on March 29. – AP
