Jules, please do not take things too seriously. Comer is when I meant the P50, not the others. Of course there are batches that face production inaccuracy, and the importer will definitely say that there is no problem. Take note that the same engines were being used in the junior category, not just formula piston-port.
You only seized once? Do you know of drivers running on rich settings that seized while running-in their engines? (not once but multiple times) Or having a conrod seizure while the settings are rich? You have to be more “in the know” to know these things.
Kart prix, you would only need to pay for the licence + medical, after all the only difference is the addition of a pre-final. I don’t know why are you comparing club race and kart prix, afterall to be exact kart prix is 2 days of competition. If you say that u race just on Sunday (club) I take it that you are not practicing on Saturday? If you do then it would be considered 2 days club, 3 days kart prix (friday practice). Other costs remain the same other than the additional fuel for the extra pre-final.
With this Yamaha SL Series I am sure that your budget will “not be dried” and I was wondering if you will participate, since there isn’t a requirement for the AAM licence?

Conclusion

FYI – KKS Records
James Veerapen – Piston Port Champion 2000 – KBS & KKS Club
Niger Ng – Piston Port Champion 2001 – KBS
Woo Wei Liang – Piston Port Champion 2001 – KKS Club
David Ong – Pulled out of KBS Kart Prix RD 2 2001 midway to race in 125cc.
My friend – If you insist I have to be serious here as afterall, I raced in this category and can say I write with personal experience. Of which I think you would have seen me racing as then cos I came 2nd in the 2001 Championship after Woo Wei Liang on the club level or did you not?

To say that these things siezed when running in and etc…..I am very sorry to say you have not very good mechanics or was told the wrong way to run these things. For the record, I rebuilt once ( out of power search ) and seized once before I traded in the still stock standard engine. ( engine no 808, nicknamed BOB )

Why I compared the club & kart prix – I wanted to show you that your so claimed “best in Malaysia” KKS club and others killed a introductory category of kart racing for commercial reasons and the example THEY gave was – LACK OF COMPETITORS IN KART PRIX! Not my words but the KKS Secretary’s.

On top of the club membership and AAM Race License RM250 ( medical extra ), the cost of racing in Kart Prix requires a higher entry fees for EACH round, it wears things ( engine, tyres ) out more cos there’s MORE heats. If you are serious enough it also allows you to bring 2 chassis, 3 engines for the weekend. Small budget to you. Club racing….I pay RM100 per race and annual membership RM150.

Whether I practise on Sat before my club races is immaterial here but if you want to know – I dun. And yes, I raced against William Woo, Niger Ng ( my 125 enduro team mate ) and also James and David briefly….some of which I knew as early as 1999 from karting.

Starting was difficult for the Juniors as they were too weak, their karts too heavy ( from Ballast ), their engines are heavily modded making it hard to start and they lack the practise the start – again my comments are based on personal observation. ( the engine mods one is my tuner’s comment ). By the way, who do you want me to ask? Junior racers like Shafiq Ali, Abdul Hafi, Dominic Ang, Daniel Verrapen? They call me “uncle”.

Sorry to lead the readers on a merry go round on a topic not necessary related to the topic but as said, I am merely explaining to our friend here the facts. I feel his subsequent replies potray a negative aspect of the technicality of karting. It’s a mechanical sports afterall and tuning/setup knowledge is power…so please DUN expect any less when the engine is far from perfect for you.

Well, the offer stands – identify yourself and we chat outside over a TT.

In any case….

Yamaha do not have start issues cos it’s electric start but it’s a race engine in any case and seizures CAN happen – so please know what you are doing before turning the needle. Let the experts do it for you….

Someone mentioned that the Yamaha introduction is a step backwards after what they did to PP class – I disagreed that its a backward move and wish this brings back the foundation class we so badly need!

Hope u guys turn up at the launch.

ChAMPIONSHIP LAUNCH EVENT FOR YAMAHA CUP MALAYSIA

Guys,

I spoke to Aaron Lim and as advised earlier, there’s a LAUNCHING of the CHAMPIONSHIP this SUNDAY 26th Feb at ELITE Track. ( Time 10:30am to 1pm )

During this launch, KKS & Yamaha will be present and explanation made for their support and participation. The Yamaha Head will be there as well.

Briefing by KKS on races will be made, explanation of the application procedures etc will be given as well.

Other info in form of brochures will be given out and a lunch provided….

Demo runs on the Senior, Junior and Cadet karts will be held and to some more serious prospective drivers……test drive granted but this is on invitation basis only. ( bring your gear/suit just in case….) Chassis are BIREL…..one of best brands out there!

Btw, MRF tyres cost RM220 per set so this is very affordable and will surely last you one weekend…..about 100 laps life.

For those keen, please be there to support the launch and to show Yamaha how keen we Malaysian karters are!!!

Cheers
Jules

By the way….u mentioned starting problems on PP….

WHAT starting problem? unless u mean they have to be push started? That was the normal procedure and like anything technical……neeeded the correct technique and PRACTISE.

Yamahas are not cheap either….pls ask how much the clutch replacement cost. the fact the elite track operator ( official impprter then of yamahas ) removed all their clutches told u a story….they were a more than RM1000 a pop & you must use the yamaha branded oil for the clutches….

First thing first…..may I know who are you and where have u heard all the stories on QC problems!

COMER is not a small time engine producer….see http://www.comer-topkart.it

I was not aware of any QUALITY issues and in my 2 years of running them – I seized only ONCE and that’s cos I had the itchy hand syndrome! ( and not knowing what I was doing…)

They were as good as IAME and please please note that the Comer K80, which all cadets race worldwide and also fun karters use….come from same factory. During these years as well, the Formula Junior here used the same engines! ( allowing mods )

Maybe the source of your info had failures due to lean siezures from enthusiastic & improper tuning and illegal mods. By the way, the stock engine needed a rebuilt time every 30 – 40 hours or so…depending on how u drive and how competitive u want to be.

Yes, hard compound tyres were used – Challenger from MAXXIS and they gave little grip but last 6 months or more! ( I used 2 sets for entire season of race and practise )

As the tyres were hard, chassis tuning was very critical and hence seat time needed for experiement – which was very fine since beginners should practise and practise.

Due to this hard tyre also, our lap times were slowest and this meant we were slower than the Formula Cadets – which some drivers could not accept & left the class! (stupidly)

Why it was canned? This is my opinion – but I think cos the KKS club & certain parties were not making enough money from the class due to little International Kart Prix participation. Since you know a thing or two about our local kart racing scene ( esp the fist fights….Rd 1 2006 KKS? ), did you see how many PP drivers turned up for the club races in 2001? 15 drivers on average and on one occassion – Kiki even raced with us….

Now why so many in club races and little at the kart prix? Pls understand the mentality of us, Malaysians….we all like to make last minute decisions and some decisions are “pursuaded” by peers. To join a kart prix, you need to take 3 days out of your week and for the club races, SUndays only…..can even turn up on Sunday morning, pay entry fees and race. Kart prix are for serious ppl, needing money and commitment & time off work just for scrutinising of kart/engine/gear. Moreover, club race then needed no AAM racing license – all making racing affordable and fuss free ( which is what amateurs & hobbist drivers like )

I can write for ages here on this topic but dun need to – in fact at the end of year 2001, I wrote a very lengthy appeal letter to Paul David ( KKS Secretary ), supported by Capt Manfred Baudzus, my fellow Singapore racer to keep this class but got no reply from him. The topic was adv and disadv of canning the PP class – I have still this copy of letter.

In the end, the class died and we all spend more money going 125. My racing budget went dry and I stopped competition – but that’s a separate & personal story.

Conclusion – the PP class was the best thing they did for karting, it created some very good racing, good drivers like James Veerapen, David Ong but commercial interest by certain parties ( not only KKS ) killed it…

I wish well for the Yamaha as I want COMPETITIVE PRIVATE karting to be affordable for EVERYONE – now that’s a step above for MyKart.

kaaz38,

U replies suggest that U r new to karting. Welcome anyway.

On weights – All national and international races run with weight limits. So the lite has to add weights and the heavies….lose or go into another heavier category. ( when there’s one )

Stock standard, no engine mods are NOT new – I am a product of the Piston Port class from year class 2000-2001. This ur “best” club KKS canned it……

let’s see how far this goes but as I know Richard personally – I want this to go well for Aaron’s sake.

Anyone game here? Iskandar – yes u can get the Rosedi chassis or even a 2nd hand one……I think 3 – 5 K gets you a race-able one!

Contact Fazz or myself if help needed. Offers open to all of you.

OSF,

Ross karts very often at Shah Alam – at least last year and I have had runs with him, a few times even with mock races organised by WL on the Rotax.

He has certainly matured from AKOC last year on with some wins here. He competes actively in Macau, Philipines too. Having a Cathay Pacific pilot dad helps….

In my opinion, he is still young and I am not that sure if he is ready for the open wheelers…..just see Ermann Ibrahim in A1, yet another Shah Alam product.

Time will tell.

Past Japanese F1 drivers? Katayama, Aguri Suzuki are names that come to mind.

Alex’s stint in F1 was overshadowed by a more capable team mate Mark Webber…..hence his lack of publicity esp on local daily.

Fazz,

I think Naza’s reply revealed more clues to what I am about to say….If I recall correct – Alex’s front tyre was not pass Jos car centre to make it a legal challenge.

At the very end of the Alex’s move, u can see that he practically understeered straight as his tyres exceeded the traction circle ( from turning & braking simultaneously ). The addition stop, came from Jos rear tyre….which spun the Dutchman. ( I believe a tap from Alex’s tyre…)

If it was a legal move, he would have rub his front tyre alongside Jos panels, which obviously was not the case. Even if he did, I dun think Alex could have survived without any wing damage…

Well, that’s my 2 kupang worth and yes, Naza – whilst racing amongst friends we back off…..to give the fella a wide margin. ( I sometimes feel I race mykart events like those in Best Motoring….giving wide berth )

cheers.

I posted a comment that Alex’s move on Jos may be deemed not legal on BMW forum….but those guys disagred and they dun know what I was pointing at, which is not surprising cos they are not racers.

what do u guys think? u r all kart racers, so pls give it a proper tot before reply.

my opinion is it’s illegal but he was returning a “favour” to Jos for a similar move in …Dubai I think. so one point each – fair!

I will in due time support my above claim with reasons why but keen to hear ur opinions and knowledge on passing…..

Malaysia BOLEH – excellent finish but alex seems drained out & sweat like dog….compared the other 2!

THINGS TO IMPROVE

– please get 4 full sized cones for the startline ( I am tired running about on the scooter looking for those from citykarting )
– get a full size umbrella and base, so that our poor lap charters can sit under the shade. This will surely make more people volunteer for the job.

I think no one will bother to even see your flags…..and we are kidding ourselves expecting the drivers to obey…

if indeed attention is needed from the drivers to SLOW DOWN – always stand beside the track and WAIVE YOUR HANDS!!!! Lotsa of people doing this will surely get their attention.

In all my years of fun karting worldwide – only one track in germany requires drivers to slow down when the yellow LIGHTS around the track are flashing. It is an indoor track so you cannot miss all the beacons flashing & rotating!

noble idea but dun forget karts are normally parked all over the place and its hard to expect the starters to know your grid order as well.

best is do what K2 guys do, tell them where they r located and then they MUST sort it out themselves when approaching start line. Helpers can be there to help but ONLY when needed.

My suggestion.
